My name is Chris Code (57) and my dad's name is Frank (87), his siter was Christine (no trace). They are a Liverpool-Irish family who, apparently came over to England in the 1800's sometime - we have little information on that.
I live in Devon, in the Westcountry of England. Different spelling - Coad, Coade - exist around here and are probably Cornish. Would be inteersting to here from Codes elsewhere.

My grgrgrandmother was Maria Code born 1841 in England. I found a Maria Code on the internet at Ancestry.com, she was born in Lincolnshire in 1841 and her father was William Code. All I really know about her is when she was, I believe, 5years old an American friend of their family gave her a five dollar gold piece. She had or her father had it fixed so she could wear it on a ribbon around her neck. We still have the gold piece. She married Charles Lewis Buschmann , I believe in New Orleans, Louisanna about 1853 and before 1855. He arrived from Breman, Germany in Dec 1853 in New Orleans and in 1855 they were living in Switzerland County, Indiana. Thet had three children, Walter Louis, my grgrandfather, Lorena, and Charles Pierce. I have a tintype of her and she was a very handsome lady. She had dark hair and at the time wore it down. It is the only ptcture I ever saw of her. All her children were shorter than average. My grandfather was Walter's only child, walter Rollin Buschmann and my father was one of several children of Rollin's, the oldest. hts name was William Louis Buschmann and I was Phyllis Buschmann, only child of William. everyone here in Vevay Indiana,Switzerland County laugh because my married name is Bush. I have two chiuldren a girl Christy Mae Morgan and a son Denton William Bush. I have four grandaughters Danna Kae Morgan, Sarah Beth Morgan and Emily Ann Bush and Kelsey Lynn Bush. The only one with a nickname is Kelsey and we call her Roo or Roonie, a terrible name for a little 2 yr old girl.I have seen several places where Code is an Irish name, nothing wrong with that, but I always thought of it as English. If you have any idea who my Code Family could be feel free to say. If not I am finally to find someone with the same name. Best regards, Phyllis

Phylis,
Good to hear from you. Lincolnshire is a new site for Codes for me. My father's (Francis Code) parents were James Code, a timber merchant whose family were from Neurie (not sure of spelling), Norther Ireland, and Rafferty, Dublin.
Interestingly, my sone is called William (Bill), and it's a 'family name, as is Christopher.
I occassional have to search for citations for things I write (I'm an academic) and come across a Charles Code, whose a well know American physiologist, who write a great deal.
I was recently in Dartmouth, a small part here in Devon, and came across a plaque which includes the name Robert Code, who was a wealthy burger of the town. He dies in the reign of henny VIII and left 11 houses to the parish. His name crops up in local history books.
But there are many spellinmgs of Code, as I mentioned. I was in Sydney for about 6 years, and there are quite a few there, whose families probably came over as convicts from Ireland (political prisoners actually) or settlers.
Thre are few Codes in England, but some in Liverpool. My Dad always insists that John McNally, who was rythem guitarist with the 60s Liverpool group The Searchers (big over here them, but I dont think they made it in the US) was a cousin! But he (my dad) has the gift of the gab sometimes, and you cant always believe his stories!

Okay. Lincoln is the Cointy Town ('capital') town of the Countu of Lincolnshire, so that's cleared that up. I thought of some other information for you. 'Code' , according to something I read somewhere is a Celtic word meaning 'Cobbler's glue. So Code appears to be a 'trade name', like Smith, Thatcher, Cooper, Fowler, Butcher, etc. Codes were probably, originally, makers of cobler's glue! So were probably 'freemen' and not serfs in medieval times. The name, I aslo read somewhere, might also be Anglo-Saxon (old English) rather than Celtic.
Ireland was for about 500 years 'colonised' by English people. Most of the aristocracy of Ireland, for instance, were Norman-English - not native Irish, and large numbers of British people were settled there over those years. N Ireland, of course, was settled by Scots - hence the present Presbetarian (not Catholic) majority in N Ireland. So, Codes might have originally been of Anglo-Saxon stock, settled in Ireland, and became 'Irish'. All speculation of course!

Chris, Thank you for the information about thr Code family name and orgin. This is the family I really know nothing about. Maria died fairly young and I don't believe anyone knew anything about her but her children. And I never heard my grgrandfather speak about her. I wish I had been more interested when I was younger. If you ever want to e-mail me. My e-mail is toad1938@yahoo.com . Anything else you can think of I'd be pleased to know. Best regards. Phyllis

The Code family has been very hard to trace. The Code line in our family began with William Code, who died in Shawnee (Indian Territory), Oklahoma (Pottowatomie Co.) in 1904.

I also have record of two Codes buried in the St. Louis Cemetary in New Orleans, but I have no record of them in our family line, so I don't know if there's a connection.

I have an old Astronomy book from the 1950's that has a photograph credited to Arthur Code of Bloomenfeld, South Africa. Apparently the Code family is spread far and wide.

My grandfather was William R.A. Code born in Lincoln County, Oklahoma in 1923.

I'd be happy to compare notes and see if our lines are connected.
