Surnames: Luffberry, White
I am descended from Margaret White nee Luffberry who was the daughter of Andrew Luffberry (a ship builder) and his wife Sarah. She was born (1836), married (1858) and died (1886) in Philadelphia. Andrew and Sarah also lived in Philadelphia.

I've noticed that the last name is sometimes Lufberry and sometimes Luffbarry.

I ran into one web reference that said an Andrew Luffberry lived in NYC for a year with Isaac Loofbourrow.

I am wondering if anyone on this Board has encountered data on Lluffberry in Philadelphia in the 1800s.

My Great Grandmother Sophia Landenberger had a sister Amelia who married a William H. Luffbarry of Philadelphia in 1870. He was 27 at the time making his birth year around 1843. My guess would be that he was Margaret's little brother.

There were several families with this surname in the same part of Philadelphia at the same time and, if Margaret and William H. were not siblings, surely they were cousins. I know from an obituary that Margaret's father and mother were Andrew and Sarah, but I haven't be able to tie her to siblings.

I just came across this entry or I would have replied earlier. I have information on several lines of the Luffberry/Luffbarry family of Kensington/Philadelphia. Sarah Luffbarry (died about 1804) was the daughter-in-law of my ancestor, Godfrey Remer (17??-1781). Please contact me if you are interested in additional information on the family. Rich Remer

Yes, I would very much like to figure out my Luffberry relatives! I am descended from Margaret H. Luffberry, b. June 2, 1836 and d. May 12, 1886. She was married to Courtland Yardley White, Sr. An obituary lists her mother as Sarah Luffberry and her father Andrew Luffberry. Sarah's middle initial might have been B. from a handwritten note. Margaret is buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia.

Truly bizarre! I've found Margaret's marriage in the register of First Presbyterian of Kensington (Philadelphia) but can't find her in ANY of the many Luffberry/Luffbarry families of the time! There is a household headed by Andrew Luffbarry and his wife, Sarah (nee Garing) but it does not include a "Margaret" in the Census of 1850; she would have only been about 14 and normally in the household of her parents. I'll try searching more, in case she was in another household but this may be very difficult to solve. There were many Luffberrys in Kensington at the time, with similar forenames as well (Andrew was a popular family name). The Luffberrys were originally from a shipwright 'clan', in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Some members relocated to Kensington (then known as 'Northern Liberties') shortly before the Revolution. If you'd rather continue this in private, you can use my e-mail address at: glenview827@aol.com They continued as shipwrights, then boat builders into the late 1800's, and were well known in the Kensington community.
