William and Mary Conner family in Jones County

William and Mary Conner family in Jones County

Posted: 5 Oct 2009 1:12AM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Conner, Connor, Carney, Brown
I'm looking for any information on the family of William (b. abt. 1810) and Mary (b. abt. 1820) Conner.

Their children included:
Calvin (b. 1837)
Ivy (b. abt. 1850)
etc. . . .

Calvin and Ivy changed their last name to Carney, I assume after leaving Jones County around the late 1880s, early 1890s.
I know that Conner was a common name used among the Tuscarora nation in Jones County, and my Conner family is listed as "mulatto" (a common designation for Indians during this time period). After they left Jones Co. and changed their name, they were listed as "white."
Any help at all on this family is greatly appreciated. This family is very difficult to research.
Calvin is my g-grandfather. He married Martha Ann Elizabeth Brown about 1875. It was his second or third marriage. I do not have the last names of his other wives.
Wilmington, NC

Bruce, Ivey was my great-grandfather's (Calvin Conner) younger brother. I am working on Calvin's Civil War military history now.

Ivey and Calvin must have been pretty close because they both moved out of Jones County around the same time and changed their last names to Carney. Also, my dad said he remembers his dad talking about Ivey.

My email is Maybe we could talk over the phone.
