SLEIGH, William & Mary

SLEIGH, William & Mary

Surnames: SLEIGH
What info can be provided for the following:
SLEIGH Mary, William arrived 1838-11-16 on Rajasthan from London 1838-07-26 [Source:2,6,7(A CALDERWOOD),20,23(1)]

Why would Janet Anne Sleigh (age 19) venture to Australia on her own (apparently arrived Adelaide on the HOOGHLY 3 Jun 1843) unless she had relatives or friends already in South Australia? I believe Janet Sleigh was transcribed originally as Jessie Heigh?

The above William & Mary must be connected in some way!!!

Hi Tom,
There are marriages for both unfortunately no father's names recorded on either so can't link them that way.
Mary SLEIGH { 22} N m Alexander CALDERWOOD { 28} N 10.10.1842 Adelaide 7/3
They had 9 children
Mary Sleigh CALDERWOOD d 28.4.1875 aged 54 Married Alexander CALDERWOOD { H} RES & POD Stony Creek Tiers DIS: NAI 67/415
Janet SLEIGH { 22} S m Niel CRAWFORD {25 } N 9.2.1847 North Adelaide 7/717
They had 11 children
Janet CRAWFORD d 13.4.1907 aged 83 Widow Neil CRAWFORD {DH} Res & POD: North Adelaide DIS: Ade 324/402

Maybe their death certificates might have some clues ?? If the informant knew who their fathers were...
Let me know if you need info on the children

Regards
Alison

I forgot William !
There is no marriage for William of the right age.
There are marriages for William Henry SLEIGH { 3 children}and Stephen SLEIGH { 1 child}
I think this would be your William:
William SLEIGH d 7.1.1899 aged 84 No relative, RES & POD: Head of Boucaut DIS: Cla 258/76
Alexander and Mary CALDERWOOD were also in the Boucaut area as were Neil and Mary CRAWFORD.
So it is possible they were all related.

Alison, the Hd in SA records refers to an area called a Hundred - an old land measure of 10 miles x 10 miles = 100 square miles.

As an interesting side note I just noticed, Elizabeth, daughter of Alexander and Mary (Sleigh) Calderwood married Peter Crawford, son of Neil and Janet (Sleigh) Crawford! Did you realise that? So the families were related by marriage if nothng else.

Hi,

You may all know this already. William Sleigh (d. 1899 as noted, never married) escorted his sister, Mary to South Australia. Janet is Mary Sleigh's sister, was escorted out later by her brother, James. You will find the last names for this family variously spelt as 'Sleigh", "Sly", or 'Sligh".

I have just finished researching this little family group and will post the story as soon as I get around to pulling it all together.

A key reference source to bringing the group together is the "Diary of Alexander Calderwood". From there, they all fall into place.

Yes, Janet Sleigh married the Neil Crawford in the thread.

James Sleigh took off in 1850 to California on the California Gold Rush, then on into Oregan in the Oregan Gold Rush before returning to NSW in 1852 and seemingly disappeared.

As an aside, William Sleigh escorted his brother-in-law's future ex-wife to California as well in 1850, spent all of 8 days in San Francisco, and boarded a ship back to Adelaide!
