I have a half 2xgreat uncle who was born in London in 1873 by the name of Frederick Magnus Hartvig. His father was reputed to have been a tea merchant from Sweden. His mother was Emily Janes. On the 1901 census he is shown as a policeman, recently married to a Harriett Richards (known in the family as aunt Hatty).
On the 1871 census for London in the Camden Town area there is a Hugo M Hartvig, aged 20, originating from Sweden. He is shown as a boarder, and student. Does anyone recognise any of these persons and can offer any further information please?

He appears on the birth index as Frederick Magnus Janes, b. June quarter 1873, Pancras district, London.

Could this be them in 1881?

Many thanks Jenna. I had the 1881 census entry but not the Trade directory information. The Wood Green item is certainly worth pursuing.

It is long time since this communication (2005) so you may have got more information in the mean time. Hugo Magnus Hartvig was son of Ludvig and Paulina Hartvig living in Gothenburg, Sweden. He studied in England and met Emily there. It is unclear to me if he stayed or returned to Sweden. There is a note in a directory that H M Hartvig worked as a clerk in a firm in Gothenburg 1877.
