I am a descenant of Col. John Jarnagin, born about 1720 in Pennsylvavia Co. I saw in the local library that there were Jarnagins (spellings varied) from North Carolina. I would like to know if anyone knows of earlier Jarnagins. Thanks, Jeff

My 5th Great Grandparents were John and Mary Smith Jarnagin. Col John Jarnagin got the land that belonged to his brother Capt. Thomas Jarnagin and that's how the land in Rutledge,Grainger Co. TN that we descendents call the old family homestead, came to belong to Col. John Jarnagin, and still belongs in the Jarnagin family.

All this info. came from the "Jarnagin Collection" by Glen Susong Clark now out of print

Update to my post below. I need to make some corrections to what I posted below. The homestead at Blaine Crossroads, Grainger, TN., was purchased by my 4th Great Grandparents John and Susanna Clark Jarnagin from his Uncle Capt. Thomas Jarnagin. One of Capt. Thomas's daughters passed away, so John Jarnagin my 4th Great Grand Grandfather bought her share of the land she would inherit from Capt. Thomas, her father.

Do you happen to know of a Juia Jarnigan, daughter of Amanda C. Jarnigan (maiden name Blair) who is possibly from Georgia. They also had a son named E. H. Jarnigan or Henley Jarnigan, a daughter Lucy and the daughter Julia P. Jarnigan. Thanks for any info.

Hello Darlene,

I am not familiar with the family surname Jarnigan. All the family info I have is on the John & Capt Thomas (brothers) Jarnagin lines, of which I am descended from John Jarnagin.

I have seen on some of the family history message boards, where folks have used both spellings for some members of my family, but in the family history that I have, researched by some members of the Jarnagin family, back to John Jarnagin and Capt Thomas Jarnagin's parents, the family spelling of the surname, has been consistently Jarnagin.

Regards,
Debbie

Yes Jarnagin is the way we spell our name as well. Col. John Jarnagin born about 1720 in Virginia, is my direct ancestor. Would really like to know where his parents came from. My theory is Norway or Sweeden but not sure. ant info would be great. also Daws Rolls info for any of the jarnagins would be good as well.

Thanks,

Jeff Jarnagin

I guess I am on the wrong line of Jarnigans - I believe my Jarnigan family comes from Captain Thomas Jarnigan or C. T. P. Jarnigan, I have him born in Tennessee with children - I believe one of the children is my greatgrandmother, Julia P. Jarnigan but I am unable to find the link. I had always thought that Amanda was Thomas Jarnigan's wife, but now my be his daughter, I believe Amanda married an Albright? Anyway, it looks like the wrong family line. Thanks for your reply.

Hello Darlene,

This is where I get confused! lol Umm, according to the extensive researched history I have on the Jarnagins, Capt. Thomas's surname is spelled Jarnagin, so if you were looking for Capt Thomas Jarnigan, I don't know if you would find the correct info on him.

Capt Thomas's wife was Mary Witt Jarnagin. They had the following children.

1.Noah 2.Lavinia 3.Chesley 4.Martha 5.Rhoda 6.Anna 7.Jeremiah 8.Patsy 9.Benjamin 10.Preston 11.Pleasant

My 4th Great Grandfather John Jarnagin was the nephew of Capt Thomas as John's father John and Capt Thomas were brothers. They were the sons of John and Mary Bynum Jarnagin, according to many accounts on the family, however there are those, who question the parentage of John and his brother Capt. Thomas Jarnagin.

I hope this info has been of help to you! :-)

Debbie
