Jeff,
I haven't found out to much more information. Our Jeremiah did have a John in aprox. 1822 in Ohio. Where was your John born and what were your John's childrens names? They had a lot of children approximately 13 or 14. Some might have been of Native American extraction. But this has not been proven yet. They were mostly born in Mo.,however some were in Ind. and Ky.My computer was down for a while and I'm not sure if this is the information you were looking for or not. I do also have the list of our Jeremiah's children. But our Jeremiah was born approx.1788 in Pa. Which I believe it what you listed also.
Hope this helps in your search
Get back to me if this helps.Maybe you can see some tie in with some of the other family names.
Kathy.

Kathy,

I think that it is possible that my John & your Jeremiah may have been brothers. It seems that they named their children after their brothers & sisters. That could be why there is so many with the same names.
Thanks for the reply.
Jeff

I also had a John Pettit but don't know exactly where he was born but his son William Pettit was born in New Jersey & went on to Ohio where his son Henry Grimmel, my Great Grandfather was born. Then the family came to Lebanon, Van Buren Co.,Iowa. This is where William & some of his children are born. My Johns Father was also William Pettit. There are several Williams & John Pettits. My John was born in 1700s also.

Hi Debra,

Thanks for responding. I don't think we connect. My John died in OH. 1850. His son Hector (my ggrandfather) went on to IN., & then on to Benton Co. IA.
Good luck with your research.

I see you are researching Pettits, as I am beginning to.
My grandmother was Florence Dickey. My ggrandmother was Eldora Ellen Pettit who married Lou Roland Dickey. Eldora's father was John Pettit Jr, b 1846 in Ohio, died in 1885. John Jr married Amanda McDaniel b 1850 in Missouri, died 1937. His father, John Sr was married to Lucinda Dix.

If any of this connects for you, let me know, I do have other details....

This is a really difficult line. I am working on a Moses Pettit from Pennsylvania also. I am at a dead end too.
I have found several Pettits and am trying to work on this line from the 1600's forwrd. So far it has not worked but I will keep trying. Moses married a Mahala Helmick (I am stuck on that line too) They had 8 children but not a Jeremiah as far as I know. One of the children (my gg grandmother was Clara or Clarinda Mahala Pettit. She married
Ezekial Fulton Custer both of Pennsylvania. If I find a Jeremiah I will let you know. If you find a Moses that fits this please let me know. my e-mail is

This is a longshot, but I have a difficult William Wallace Pettit who I am looking to connect to his family.

He showed up in Fulton county, IN in 1856, where he married Jemima Sherow (Shero).

They were in Marshall county, IN for the 1860 census, where William listed his age as 23. There were no other Pettits nearby. This would indicate William was born about 1837-8.

William was killed in 1865 after being kicked by a horse. Jemima remarried to a John Wesley Young.

William Wallace Pettit and Jemima Sherow Pettig had 4 daughters:
Hattie
Clarise Ann
Margaret
Elizabeth Jane b.1861, whom I am descended from.

I have reviewed death certificates for their daughters and show both IN and OH as William's birthplace.

Jemima Sherow's family migrated from OH to IN about 1844.

I have seen the name spelled Pettet, Pettit, Petit, Petet etc.

EDITED: I forgot to mention - there is family lore that says William Wallace Pettit was Irish Catholic. Yes, I know, Pettit is not an Irish name. It's worth noting because it seems it caused some family division. Jemima was not catholic and the family lore says William's family had disowned him when he married outside his faith.
