He married Margaret Elvira BRYSON b 1846 and lived in Butler Co., Pa. Possibly his father was named John also and could have lived in Pittsburgh and owned land in Butler Co., Pa.

From my researching on the McGowan families in Butler Co, my speculation to where Margaret fits into these families:

These is allot of documentation on Andrew McGowan who settled in Prospect. He had two
sons James b 1809 and George later with 7 girls Darcus b 1807 being the first. I'm
looking for John McGowan's, Sr who lived in this area and was about the same age as Andrew. She could possibly be his daughter or maybe his sister. John McGowan, Sr had a son John McGowan, Jr who I'm speculating is my gggrandfather, father to John McGowan b 1841 in Whitestown, Butler Co., in the 1870 census Connoquennessing Twp. Butler Co age 30 with three children. They moved to Beaver Co and appears in the 1880 census there with his family.
I'm putting together a database of all the McGowan's that lived in Butler Co or the surrounding area in hope of linking my family to them. Any contributions of McGowans that you know lived there I would appreciate whatever information you have.

Another speculation of who Margaret's parents is:
Samuel McGowan and Jane sold property to James and John McGowan land situated Glade Run, Middlesex Twp. Butler Co. March 23, 1817. Last will and testament of Samuel dated March 26, 1826 mentions his children - one being Margaret Bonner - not clear if this would be her married name or middle name.

I have been going through the 1850 census for North Butler Township, Lawrence Co., PA. I located Thomas Cleland [47] and Margaret McGowan [44] as a family with all of their children. In the same Township there is a Robert McGowan 73 with Margaret 66, Isabel 29, and Sarah 25. Thomas's children include Margaret, Robert, Sarah, Thomas. This looks like the family that I have been looking for.

I am trying to identify the parents of these McGowan siblings:
Plummer W. McGowan born in Prospect PA 1875, died Octber 15, 1931 in Butler Hospital. He never married and farmed all his life in West Liberty, PA, where he is buried.
Susie M. McGowan, born in 1860, and died May 18, 1923 in her home in Slippery Rock, PA. Had a son: Earl Leonard McGowan
Laura McGowan, died May 1, 1898, she may have died after childbirth. Laura married Samuel A. Wright. They are buried at White Oak Springs Church in Connoquenessing Township.
William McGowan
Elizabeth McGowan
Mary McGowan
Nettie McGowan, may have married Alonzo W. McCollough
Also looking for parents of Alexander McGowan who married Sarah Jane Davis b. June 1, 1855 d. Oct. 1, 1907 They had 3 sons: Milton, Roy and Floyd.
Trying to see if the Prospect-Portersville-and West Liberty McGowans are all related.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I am looking for a William Roy McGowan that was born 7/4/1900 and married Myrtle Lee Matthews, but I can't find any thing on him...this is my grandfather...I was just wondering if this could be the same man. It's a wild guess on all the McGowan's...maybe I hit a lucky hit.

Dana McGowan was my Great-Great-Grandfather. He had a son (Francis Victor) and daughter (Mildred). Dana was born in Prospect, PA...which i'm told is on the land of Andrew McGowan who was from Maryland. Any idea how these all relate together. I have no information on Dana's parents, i'm told that he was raised by his grandmother.

I found out who Dana's Mother was, still not sure about the father. I found his birth certificate at butler county. It says his name was Dana Clyde McGown (b 1882) in Prospect, PA, Father was John McGowan, mother was Mary(Marietta) McGown.

I think the father listed was actually his grandfather (common when they did not know the father or did not want to list the father) as it looks like there was a cousin of Dana's that the same thing might have happened to.

Mary was born about 1850 to John(1822-) and Susanna(1824-).

I also found out that they lived right next door to the McGowan Potato farm in Prospect (ran by Andrew McGowan's family).
