Hi all.

I'm looking for the descendants of John BARTLETT (1760-1822) m. Agnes Fisher RENFRO (1770-1850) in North Carolina. Specifically, I'm trying to prove that they had a son, William, born ca 1798.

Any help is much appreciated.

The codes in brackets at the end of each record are my coding system for this family, and it shows how they tie into the Mayflower BARTLETTs, thusly:

[F]. Robert BARTLETT 1603 England-1676 MA; m c1629 Mary WARREN (dau of Richard WARREN/Mayflower)

[F1]. Benjamin BARTLETT 1633-c1691; 1m Susannah JENNEY; 2m 1656 Sarah BREWSTER (dau Love /Mayflower)

[F1B]. Samuel BARTLETT 1660-bef 1713 m 1683 Hannah PABODIE

[F1B3]. Samuel BARTLETT 1691 MA-1749/50 MA; m 1725 Hannah CHURCHILL b 1697 MA (dau of John CHURCHILL & Rebecca DELARIO)

F1B3A]. Samuel BARTLETT III b 1726 Plymouth, MA; d 7 Apr 1780 Plymouth, MA; 1m c1754 MA [?NC] Betsy MOORE b c1730; d bef 1764 NC; Samuel 2m 7 Aug 1766 Plymouth, MA Elizabeth JACKSON b c1736 (dau of John JACKSON & Mary RATCLIFFE MOORE)

We now have DNA on file from a descendant of the Buncombe Co, NC BARTLETTs which is a match with several other DNA results from the Mayflower line. Incidentally, this DNA also matches DNA of descendants of Joshua, Joseph and Nathan BARTLETT who were from southern VA/northern NC and went to Overton & White Co, TN sometime after the RevWar. And the DNA matches a descendant of John BARTLETT (m Priscilla) who died 1801 in Green Co, KY.

We believe Joseph, Joshua and Nathan BARTLETT are half-brothers of Peter RENFRO [Joshua BARTLETT and his half brother Peter RENFRO were at Fort Pitt in 1762 getting Joshua's wife, mother and sister-in-law who had been captured by Indians. It was reported that they lived on Blackwater, bedford Co, VA...]

Do you know of any RENFRO connections to this line?

This is fantastic information!

But, I'm still a little lost. Maybe I'm just overlooking the obvious, but where did you get the names of John & Agnes' children? I need to find verifiable proof that William is there son. Was there a will or other documentation that spells it out clear as day for me???

Thanks so much for your help with this--I'm still a bit new at this so sometimes these pictures have to be drawn in Crayon for me!

Shannon;

Have you looked at the Buncombe Co, NC census records? All of the BARTLETTs there fit neatly into one family. Sometimes there is no "smoking gun" readily available, like a bible that says who the parents and children were, or a will that lays it all out - in those cases we use the "preponderance of evidence" method. The BARTLETTs in Buncombe Co, NC were often near each other in the census records, and it's pretty clear they were all from the same family. Have you looked into the Probate Records or annual Tax Lists?

Hope this helps you;

• In Jul 1794, Hickman Hensley was listed a Justice presiding over court. (Buncombe Co, NC Court Minutes, published in Old Buncombe Co, NC Genealogical Society Around this time of 1793, an interesting event happened: Elizabeth Rentfrow (a niece of Agness Fisher Hensley) gave birth to a child (on 29 Jan 1794), who's father was Hickman Hensley. She and Hickman would eventually have nine children together (the last in 1815). I can't help but wonder what Agness Fisher Hensley had to say about this. The fact of these children (who all kept their mother's name "Rentfrow") being Hickman's children is well proven, both by his family bible and other documents. The fact that they did not marry would seem to show that Agness was still alive. Some have suggested that she died, and Hickman married Elizabeth as a second wife, but if that were true, the children would have the Hensley surname
