James & Elizabeth Foulis

James & Elizabeth Foulis

I am looking for information on James and Elizabeth FOULIS (nee CRAIGIE). They lived in Deerness, Orkney. James was born in 1801 to Thomas FOULIS and Mary COPLAND. Before 1832 he married Elizabeth CRAIGIE (born about 1806). Together they had at least 8 children: George, Elizabeth, Mary, Jane, John, James, Sarah and William. George, James, Sarah and William all moved to South Australia.
I was mainly after the death of James and Elizabeth. James died before 1876 (or so his son, James' marriage notice in the newspaper states).
Maybe some Census returns could help narrow the gap. However I have been unable to access these due to the fact that I don't have a paid Ancestry membership.

If you live in Australia you can go to the local library and access Ancestry for free.

Yes, I do know that but the nearest library is over an hour away from where I live.

Surnames: Craigie and Foulis
Hello Blake
I have an Elizabeth Craigie born 1806 in Deerness, Orkney to Oliver Craigie and his wife Plumbina nee Wick. I believe her sister Mary born 1813 is my GGG Grandmother, Mary arrived here in Adelaide in 1839 and married Richard William Davis in Feb 1841. A kind gentlemen sent me Census info this morning from Deerness = 1821 showing Elizabeth Craigie 15 and her parents & siblings. The 1851 Census at Breck Deerness includes .."Foulis Nephews John 8 and James 5"

Hi Jilly,

It's funny I actually already had Richard William Davis and Mary Craigie in my tree, but I hadn't made the connection between these two Mary Craigie's now.
Mary and Richard's daughter, Jane Davis was the 2nd wife of Andrew Nicholson whose first wife was Sarah Foulis, that daughter of my James and Elizabeth (Craigie) Foulis. Unfortunately Sarah died shortly after their marriage due to complications from a miscarriage.

Nice to hear from people I am related to. Thank you very much for helping me with that, even though you didn't mean to.

Hello again Blake, How are you related to Richard W Davis and wife Mary Craigie?

I hadn't made the connection between Elizabeth Foulis nee Craigie and Mary until I received the new info. yesterday, it was great to finally know for sure I had the right Mary Craigie as my GGG Grandmother. I was almost sure when I found the marriage of Andrew Nicholson & Sarah Foulis and then Jane Davis.

Per Mary's death notice in the paper she arrived in SA in 1839, have you found which ship? Best Jilly

Hi Jilly,

I am not really related to Richard W Davis and Mary Craigie. I was only looking for Jane's birth because of Andrew's remarriage to her after Sarah Foulis (the sister and daughter of my ancestors).

When I saw that Jane's mother was a Craigie I thought I'd investigate further, however I didn't quite make the connection as you had.

Sorry I don't know which ship she arrived on, but many of those people from Orkney were seafarers so she may have been a crew member, I'm not sure if females were crew members in those days... But if she was it'd explain why there's no record of her arrival.

Thanks Blake, guess we have a connection through Elizabeth nee Craigie, Mary's sister. See there were quite a few 'master mariners' in the families who settled here. Richard Davis was the signal-man in the Semaphore House on West Terrace, Adelaide where he and Mary lived. Jilly
