I am looking for information on my father's family. My father was Albert Fletcher-his mother Lucy Linder Fletcher. In the 1940s-1950's they lived in Bedford, PA but I think the family may have originated in Cumberland,M. I think my grandfather was C.W Fletcher and he had a brewery (Old Export?) in Cumberland. The family may have been involved in the Civil War. I have an old album (red velvet from the 1800's that was my grandmother's) that has old photo's, including tin types. Some are of people in Civil War uniforms. Many of the photos have logos from Cumberland and Bedford photographers. Also, I don't know anything about my grandmother's family(my father's mother. Her maiden name was Lucy Linder; she has a sister, Katherine, who married a Frank Shook.I would like to know how far back the family goes; what country they came from, etc. Any information will be appreciated. Reply here or to the e-mail address-thanks!

Hi Marilyn!
I've been working on this "nest" of Fletchers for about 9 years now. They are alomst all descended from Jacob Fletcher (b. 1743 York Co. PA), who moved his family from Taneytown, Frederick Co.--now Carroll Co.--MD to Bedford Co., PA, in 1793. His homestead and the Fletcher Family Cemetery are in Monroe Twp. between Chaneysville and Clearville, just off of PA Rte. 26, at the intersection know as Five Forks.

Most of the Allegany Co. Fletchers, though not all, are descended from his oldest son Philip (1768-1854), whose farm lay near Pratt's Hollow, just east of Polish Mountain on I-68. He ran a tavern on the old National Pike, Rt. 40, which stood just off of "old 40" at the summit. These Fletchers were scattered between Flintstone, Piney Grove, Little Orleans, Chaneysville, Clearville, Everett, Bedford, and other places.

Tom Clabaugh, out in Ohio, as set up a nifty Bedford County History and Ancestor Connection Website (I haven't written down the exact address, but my aol search engine picks it up using "Bedford county" as a search subject. On the site is a nice file on the Fletcher Cemetery, with pictures and the full text of the brochure on the Cemtery I put together with Mike Barkman of Monroe Twp.

Supply me with some name/date data, and I'll see what I have. I haven't mapped out many of Philip's lines (his brother John Fletcher--1774 to 1860--was my g-g-g-grandfather), but I have some things.
Let me know if I can help.

All the best, and Happy New Year!
David Fletcher, Richmond VA

David,
Is this my line of Fletchers? I have John born about 1760 (don't know where) married Phoebe Bickel (I think from Sussex, NJ) and moved to Hamilton Cty, Ohio (now Cincinnati) from Bedford Cty, PA in 1791 along with several families. Don't know for sure but think John had brothers Richard and George who also went to Ohio. John had sons David, William, and Jesse. Family history (myth?) has it that the Fletchers were farmers in PA and made whiskey. Please email me at smlathrum@aol.com if you can help me.
