I have inherited a Family Tree Maker file that I would like to convert to GEDCOM so that I can read it into my Family History program. Is there anyone who could do that for me?

Thanks for any help that you can give.

You can download a free Family Archive viewer from http://www.genealogy.com/abtffiv.html?Welcome=1047242877
You will be able to view the Family Tree Maker file and export it to GEDCOM

Thanks for the public and private help. I solved my problem by purchasing FTW Version 10.

Hi -

I have the same problem of converting an FTW file to a Gedcom, or more particularly, Legacy file.

I downloaded the viewer as suggested, but it turns out that the FTW file must have been created in a later version because the viewer can't help me.

I have instructions that tell me how to get the person to export from their program to a gedcom, but they don't seem to be working. The file always comes with the extension .ftw. The person I am dealing with is in another state and they are also not that computer savvy. They may just not be following the instructions 100%.

Any other options available before we drive each other crazy trying ?

Thanks

The FTW file that I converted to GEDCOM was not a current version, so I am not sure why your conversion did not work.
If you want to send your FTW file direct to my email address, I will try to convert it for you and hopefully return a GEDCOM file back to you.If the viewer does not work, I now know someone with the full version of Family Tree Maker and I am sure that I can twist his arm (only a little) for a conversion.
Regards
Phil

Hi again -

Perhaps I could have been a bit clearer.

It appears that Family Tree Maker the .ftw file was exported from was a more recent version than the viewer. Therefore the viewer, being older, could not recognise the formating.

My poor friend has been trying over and over again, as well as all day today to get it working. I just received another version and I will see how that goes.

THANK YOU very much for the offer - I may just be in touch !

Family Tree Legends has a free family tree program for download (http://www.familytreelegends.com) that will import FTW files and can save the output as a GedCom, and then you are free to choose your family tree software.

No it won't. I've just downloaded family tree builder as advised and it will only import Gedcom files.
Restrictive practices in the computer industry again! If Ford made tyres which would only fit on Ford wheels they would be slammed with a billion pound suit by the anti-competition rules in the EEC. Why can Family Tree Maker get away with it?
