web host advice please

I am trying to create a personal genealogy site using second site software in hopes of contacting distant relatives who may have old photos, documents etc. I am now looking for a website host. I have tried my ISP "Charter.net" but I am not satisfied with their web host service - too slow, limited size etc. I am willing to pay a web host. IX web hosting in Hopkinsville, KY looks interesting though they are not genealogy oriented. Advice on web host appreciated.

Thanks

Jon

I use these guys.

Great host. You get CPanel, unlimited sub domains, Fantastico, and many other items.
Awesome support also. For instance last week I made a subdomain and the Cname record didn't get generated properly on the DNS server. I put in a ticket and they responded and fixed the problem within 10 minutes of my submittal. I'm not joking. I was seriously impressed by that.

I have used 1and1.com for about a year. They were highly recommended to me and I have had no problems with my site. Prices start at $3 a month and some packages give two free domains. I use their $4.95US Windows account and get 2 domain names, 100 GB web space, 1,000 e-mail accounts and 1,000 GB motnly traffic.

The only issue I had was trying to give them a credit card to pay. They are in the UK and my card company would not authorize payment.

Jon:

Unless you add significant modifications (not HTML), the host's orientation toward genealogy is irrelevant. Second Site's output is supported by every Web hosting service not run out of a pigpen.

I use Earthlink, which is also my e-mail ISP, and have been very pleased with them.

I use www.123-reg.co.uk. They are one of the cheapest around and are sufficient for my use as a novice. See www.muddock.com

There are a bunch of websites where you can build your site with their tools right online - no downloads of software needed. I find them better quality and much easier to figure out than the "load software on your computer" route. They typically host your site for free if you allow them to put ads on it. You can pay if you want to get the ads off or get your site listed under your own domain name. Check out Wikipedia for a list of free webhosts at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Free_Webhosts.

Clearly, "vp748" has no idea what Second Site does, nor what the challenges are related to building web sites from genealogy databases.

Let's begin by saying that it's class-less and spam-ish to post that message here. This is not a forum offering general purpose advice for how to make web sites or find a web hosting service. This forum is dedicated to helping users get the most out of Second Site.

Regarding using online tools, those comments are at least naive and at worst deliberately misleading. It's simply not possible to use online tools to create a web site from TMG: no online tool reads a TMG database directly. Yes, you can use GEDCOM-based tools, but GEDCOM does not support the rich information model of TMG and so you can't produce web sites with the depth provided by Second Site.

The other information--about free web hosting, etc--is relevant to the original message, but given that message is now 8 months old, was "vp748" really trying to be helpful?

Just an update. I chose Second Site. Fantastic product! Could not be happier. Check out the website www.jonsgen.com. I have recently purchased the newer second site version and I am working on updating my website with that product.

Regards to all

Hi, Jon:

Took a look at your site. As usual, I checked out "Martin" and "Dutton" in case there are any connections. Doesn't look like it. I did notice that you have a *lot* of sources with unknown values of one kind or another on the Source Pages. One of the biggest uses of Second Site is as a tool to help us all clean up our information, so don't be discouraged; many of us have been there too.

Prices for 1and1.com have changed a little bit but they are still real good folks. They use email address and password for account access. They were helpful when I both mistyped my email and forgot my password. I highly recommend them for good customer service.
