Wells, Kennedy, Taylor and Kernaghan?

Surnames: Wells Kennedy Taylor Kernaghan
I am looking for any information on my GG grandparents. He is Washington Wells born in Ireland in 1829, she is Margret (Margaret) Kennedy born in 1834. They emigrated to USA in the late 1860's to early 1870's. On Margaret's death certificated her parents are listed as Thomas Kennedy and Alice Taylor. From my Great grandmothers obituary they came from County Monaghan. Any information would be greatly appreciated. They also could be possibly related to Kernahan (Kernaghan) families as William Kennedy and Mary A Kernaghan lived close by in Illinois and 4 of the Kennedy children are buried by Washington and Margaret Wells. William Kennedy's father was also Thomas.

Hello Elashmore,

I found information that shows your great great grandfather’s surname had originally been Wales, rather than Wells.

For example, below is the marriage index for Washington Wales and Margaret Kennedy, which shows the marriage took place in “Aughnamullen,” County Monaghan, on 15 August 1863. The index further noted that Washington’s and Margaret’s fathers were both named Thomas. Aughnamullen is more generally spelled Aghnamullen.

The index comes from the Latter Day Saints (LDS) website at: https://www.familysearch.org/#form=historical_records

The full marriage record for Washington and Margaret can be found in LDS microfilm number 101445. You can order and pay the $7.50 rental fee for this film online by going to the following LDS link:
https://www.familysearch.org/films/lookup/products/view/film...

Before ordering the film however, you’ll need to establish a free account. Depending on your location, you may be able to have the film sent to a participating public library or historical society.

If you don’t wish to order the film online, you can order it by going to your nearest Family History Center.

The above index refers to a civil marriage, rather than a church marriage. This means that Washington and Margaret had belonged to one of the Protestant denominations, perhaps the Church or Ireland, or maybe the Presbyterian Church. I know this because the government in Ireland began civil registration in 1845, by recording Protestant marriage only. Civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths for all religious denomination however, didn’t commence in Ireland until the year 1864.

Aghnamullen was a Civil Parish in Monaghan, in which several townlands were located. To see a Civil Parish map of Monaghan, go to the Irish Times link at: http://tinyurl.com/8y7cyn6

Aghnamullen is number 2 on the map, and lies on the border with County Cavan. Click on the Number 2 on the map and you’ll come to a page showing the names of many of the towns situated in the Civil Parish of Aghnamullen

I’ll come back to more Irish records for the Wales family in a while, but I’d like to go to the 1870 U.S. for Washington Wales and his family, which I found at Ancestry.com, and where you had revised the name from Wales to Wells. If you go to the census you’ll see that the family listed just before Washington and Margaret and their children, is that of 40 year old Archibald and 40 year old Mary Wales, and their 12 year old Irish-born daughter, Sarah. In the extreme left-hand margin, under the column that reads “Dwelling-houses numbered in the order of visitation,” you’ll see the number 166 to the left of Arichibald Wales. This was the 166th dwelling visited by the enumerator. The census thus shows that both Wales families were living in the same dwelling, though in different family units. One of the families may have lived upstairs, and the other downstairs.

I believe Archibald would have been Washington’s older brother by 2 years.

You’ll also notice that Washington and Margaret named one of their sons Archibald. The census shows his age as 2/12, meaning he was 2 months old. He, and his sister, 3 year old Alice, were born in Illinois, while their older sibling, 5 year old Margaret, was born in Ireland, according to the census. This Margaret refers to the Margaret Wales who was born in Ballybay, Monaghan, as referenced in the LDS index seen above.

Below are the individual 1870 census indexes for each of the family members of Archibald and Washington Wales:

After locating the Wales family in the 1870 census, I then uncovered the Irish marriage index for Archibald Wales at the LDS website. His wife is listed as Mary Kennedy. Their fathers are listed as Thomas Wales and Thomas Kennedy, the same fathers listed in the LDS marriage index for Washington Wales and Margaret Kennedy. This indicates the Wales brothers married the Kennedy sisters.

The marriage of Archibald and Mary was recorded in Ballybay, Monaghan on 4 October 1854. Again, this would be a civil marriage record, which shows that Archibald and Mary were of a Protestant denomination.

The index follows:

You can order LDS film number 101354 online containing the full marriage record of Archibald Wales and Mary Kennedy from the following link: https://www.familysearch.org/films/lookup/products/view/film...

I forgot to mention earlier that if you don’t want to order microfilms from the LDS, you can purchase the marriage record for Washington Wales and Margaret Kennedy, as well as their daughter Margaret’s birth cert, and the marriage for Archibald and Mary, from the General Register Office (GRO), in Roscommon Town, County Roscommon. For information and costs of certificates, go to the GRO website at: http://www.groireland.ie/

Next I wanted to see if I could find Washington and Archibald Wales in an Irish property tax record known as Griffiths Valuation. This valuation was enumerated in the 32 counties of Ireland between 1847 and 1864. Griffiths Valuation for County Monaghan was completed by the year 1861. By 1861 Archibald was already married, but Washington wouldn’t be married for another two years, so I knew there was a possibility that I might find either one, or maybe both in Monagahan, in Griffiths Valuation.

It turns out I didn’t find Washington, but identified Archibald and Thomas Wales in Griffiths Valuation, living in the townland of Edenaneane, Civil Parish of Ballybay. Thomas may very well be Archibald’s, as well as Washington’s father.

Unlike a census, Griffiths Valuation did not record family members, but listed people, known as “Occupiers” who leased lands and buildings from owners or owners’ representatives. The owners or their representatives in Griffiths Valuation are known as the “Immediate Lessor.”

The Griffiths Valuation entry for Thomas Wales is below:

No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 12
Civil Parish: Ballybay
Townland: Edenaneane
Occupier: Thomas Wales
Immediate Lessor: Bradford Stuart
Description of Tenement: House, offices, and land
Area of Land: 5 Acres: 2 Roods: 20 Perches:
Rateable Annual Valuation of Land: 4 Pounds
Rateable Annual Valuation of Buildings: 15 Shillings
Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Propterty: 4 Pounds, 15 Shillings
____

Griffiths Valuation shows that Thomas Wales leased over 5 acres of land, a house, and “offices” from an Immediate Lessor named Bradford Stuart. The land was worth 4 Pounds, while the house and offices were worth 15 shillings. An office in a Griffiths Valuation record could refer to any type of outbuilding, such as a barn, shed, stable, blacksmith shop, etc. The total valuation of the property that Thomas leased was 4 Pounds and 15 Shillings. He would have paid a percentage of this amount toward the tax.

The number 12 at the top of the record refers to the location of the Wales leasehold in Edenaneane as found in an Ordnance Survey Map from the time period.

Below is the Griffiths Valuation entry for Archibald Wales, at Map Reference Number 13 for Edenaneane.. He too leased his house and land from Bradford Stuart:

No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 13
Civil Parish: Ballybay
Townland: Edenaneane
Occupier: Archibald Wales
Immediate Lessor: Bradford Stuart
Description of Tenement: House and land
Area of Land: 4 Acres: 3 Roods: 2 Perches:
Rateable Annual Valuation of Land: 3 Pounds, 15 Shillings
Rateable Annual Valuation of Buildings: 10 Shillings
Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Propterty: 4 Pounds, 5 Shillings
____

I also found a Thomas Wales in Griffiths Valuation who occupied a “freehold” in the Civil Parish of Tullycorbet, townland of Cordoolough, Monaghan. The Civil Parishes of Ballybay and Tullycorbet bordered one another.

A freehold was an agreement between the landlord and the tenant, where the tenant could hold the lease for life as long as the rent was paid. The freeholder could specify if the leasehold for life applied to himself or to a designate, such as his wife, or children.

Grifiths Valuation shows that Thomas Wales leased 17 acres of land in Cordoolough, valued at 13 Pounds, 15 Shillings, while his house and outbuildings were valued at 1 Pound and 15 Shillings. The total valuation for the property was 15 Pounds, 10 Shillings.

This entry may refer to Washington and Archibald Wales’s father Thomas, but that is a guess on my part:

No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 29
Civil Parish: Tullycorbet
Townland: Cordoolough
Occupier: Thomas Wales
Immediate Lessor: Freehold
Description of Tenement: House, offices, and land
Area of Land: 17Acres: 0 Roods: 0 Perches:
Rateable Annual Valuation of Land: 13 Pounds, 15 Shillings
Rateable Annual Valuation of Buildings: 1 Pound, 15 Shillings
Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Propterty: 15 Pounds, 10 Shillings
____

You can see where Ballybay, Edenaneane, and Cordoolough are located in relationship to one another at the Google Maps link at: http://tinyurl.com/7tbfgss

To the left of Ballybay you’ll see the townland of Edenaneane, situated just below Lisgorran. If you go north from Ballybay by panning downward on the map, you’ll come to Cordoolough, located on the R184 secondary Road. The distance from Edenaneane to Cordoolough is about 5 miles.

This close proximity indicates that the Thomas Wales leasing property in Edenaneane and the Thomas Wales with the freehold in Cordoolough, may have been the same person.

You can access and search Griffiths Valuation for free at the Ask About Ireland website link at:
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

For a Google Map view specific to Edenaneane, go to: http://tinyurl.com/82vgtgw

On the map you’ll see the letter A highlighted in orange pointing at Edenaneane. Left-click on the letter A, and a street view, or thumbnail photo of Edenaneane will appear. Left-click on the photo and you’ll be able to take a virtual tour down the narrow lanes of rural Edenaneane.

I also looked for a street-view for Cordoolough, but Google Maps has not produced one to date.

There’s a possibility that Washington and Archibald Wales were born in Edenaneane, or perhaps in another townland in the Civil Parish of Ballybay. If so, you will need to locate their baptism records. Uncovering their baptism records will depend upon which church their parents belonged to when Washington and Archibald were born.

According to a book by Brian Mitchell called “A Guide To Irish Parish Registers,” the Church of Ireland for the Ballybay Civil Parish, has parish registers that go back to 1813. If the family belonged to the Church of Ireland and were living in Edenaneane or another townland in the Ballybay Civil Parish, there’s a possibility there will be baptism records for them in the Ballybay Church of Ireland.

The 1870 census had shown that Washington and Archibald Wales were 38 and 40 years old respectively, placing their years of birth circa 1832 and 1830, that is, if their ages were accurate in the census.

Brian Mitchell’s book also shows that within the Ballybay Civil Parish were three different Presbyterian churches, noting that the 1st Ballybay Presbyterian Church holds parish registers from 1834; while the 2nd Ballybay Presbyterian Church retains registers from 1833, and that the Derryvalley Presbyterian Church has registers from 1816.

If the Wales family had belonged to one of the Ballybay Presbyterian Churches, there would only be baptism registers extent in one of the Presbyterian churches for the time period of their births. This is the Deervalley Presbyterian Church.

OTHER RECORDS

While visiting several website in search of more information about Washington Wales, I came across a ship’s passenger list at Ancestry.com, showing that a Washington Wales arrived at the Port of New York on board the ship Empire State, on 9 July 1852. The Empire State had embarked from the Port of Liverpool, England. The ship’s list gives his nationality as British/English, which, as a Protestant, he may have considered himself.

In addition, at this time in history Ireland was under the control of the British government, and so, residents of Ireland were considered citizens of Great Britain.

If the passenger list is for your Washington Wales, he would have first traveled to the U.S. many years subsequent to his marriage to Margaret Kennedy and the birth of their daughter Margaret in 1865.

Next I located the families of Washington and “Archible” “Wells,” in the 1880 census for Hanover, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. Like the 1870 census the 1880 enumeration shows both families residing in the same dwelling.

In this census Washington and Margaret’s daughters are shown to have been born in Illinois, rather than in Ireland, where the 1870 census had shown they were born. We know that Margaret was born in Monaghan, based on her LDS birth index seen earlier. She was younger than Mary, which means that Mary would have also been born in Ireland.

The 1880 census also shows there are no children in the household with Archibald and Mary Wells. In the 1870 census their 12 year old daughter Sarah was in the household with them.

I then found another record showing that Washington’s surname was Wales. This is his Illinois death index, uncovered at the
Illinois State Archives website at: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/datab...

The archive’s search engine to access pre-1916 death indexes can be found at: http://www.ilsos.gov/isavital/deathsrch.jsp

The index shows that Washington Wales died on November 10, 1884 in Hanover, Jo Daviess County. At the time of death his age is listed as 55, placing his year of birth circa 1829. I’m not sure if his age is correct in the dearth index. The full death record for Washington Wales can be found in Volume 1, Page 42 of the state of Illinois death records, certificate number 538.

When looking at Irish records indexes, I wanted to see if I could find information about Thomas Wales and his family, as well as any information about his marriage, but failed to locate anything. I also looked for a baptism index for Margaret Kennedy and the marriage of her parents, Thomas Kennedy and Alice Taylor, but again found nothing.

Aside from looking for indexes about them at the LDS and Ancestry.com websites, I also looked for them in the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) database for County Monaghan, but again, turned up nothing. But, information found at the IFHF for Monaghan shows that baptism, birth, marriage, and death records to date for the Ballybay and Tullycorbet Civil Parishes have not been transcribed, but “will be made available online on a phased basis in the coming months…”

You may want to go to the IFHF website from time to time to see if records for the Wales, Kennedy, Taylor, and Kernaghan families have been made available.

The home page for the IFHF website can be found at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/

Hello again Elashmore,

After sending the reply about the Wales family, I managed to find information about William Kennedy and Mary Anne Kernaghan at the LDS website.

Below is their marriage index, showing the marriage was recorded in “Mullafod,” County Fermanagh, on 8 June 1862. The index shows that William’s father was Thomas Kennedy and that Mary Anne’s father was James. This confirms the information you have about the names of their fathers. You can order the microfilm containing the marriage record for William and Mary at the following LDS link:

Mullaghfad is the spelling more commonly associated with the place where the couple married, and was located I the Civil Parish of Aghalurcher. To view a Civil Parish map of County Fermanagh, go to the Irish Times website link at: http://tinyurl.com/6vv457m

The Civil Parish of Aghalurcher is number 1 on the map. Click on Aghalurcher and you’ll see a list of townlands in the Civil Parish of Aghalurcher, including Mullaghfad.

There’s no way of telling why the marriage took place in Mullaghfad, Fermanagh just from the marriage index alone, though the Civil parish of Aghalurcher bordered on the Civil Parish of Tedavnet, County Monaghan.

I then located the civil birth indexes for five children of William Kennedy and Mary Anne Kernaghan at the LDS website. The births were all recorded in Dawson Grove, County Monaghan. These children include Archibald (1864); Mary (1865); Sarah Anne (1868); William (1869); and James Joseph (1871).

Dawson Grove was situated in the Civil Parish of Ematris. The Ematris Civil Parish is number 11 on the Civil Parish map for Monaghan at: http://tinyurl.com/8y7cyn6

Click on map reference 11 to see the names of the townlands located in Ematris. The full name for Dawson Grove is Dawson Grove Demesne.
