Myrland was born in Kenwood, Iowa. He received his education at a rural school until seventh grade and then went to Dow City School for eighth grade. He was a very hard worker and after completing his education he began working at the Logan Rock Quarry and then as a farmhand. On June 8, 1963, he was united in marriage to Carol Jean Carey in Nebraska. The couple made their home in Arion, then later moved to Dow City and were blessed with the birth of six children.
