Surnames: Berezowski, Bersowski, Berzowski, Horbal, Mickelow
In trying to trace my husbands great grandfather's history, on his mother's side, the great grandfather's name was Steve Mickelow, (spelling may have been different back then) and his wife's name was Stella or Stephanie. Steve's second wife was a half sister to Stella, with a maiden name of Berezowski, Bersowski, Berzowski - not sure of the spelling. Looking for any information on both sides. Steve had 3 brothers and three sisters. Nieces and nephews that came from perhaps Poland had last name Horbal although it is not quite clear if they were Steve's or Stella's nephews and nieces. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Surnames: Mickelow
It is written that Stella and Steve Mickelow came to Alberta around 1911 - 1912 and settled in the Fedorah area (Sturgeon) and that he worked as a Coronado CN section-man. The Horbals came to Alberta between 1925-1926. The three Berezowski children came in about 1928.

Thank you Peter for your help, and to SS as well. I am merely finding out more and more information as I go along. Yes they did live in the Fedorah area, after coming to Canada in or around 1900.

After searching for endless hours, I did not realize I could obtain this type of information!. Thanks again.

My grandmother was a Horbal and came to Canada in 1927 and is related to the Mickelow's. I was in Ukrainian five years ago and went to the village where she was born. If I can pass any of this info to anyone please e-mail

Thank you for your reply!
This is the information that I have
On naturalization papers...Stefan Mikolow (place of Birth Hlybowyci, East Galicia, born December 15, 1883)
married to Stefanbra Mikolow (nee Berezowsky)They called her Stella. Nationality stated as Austrian.
Please note, spelling of places and the geography of places was quite often mispelled during translation.
Stefan's (also known as Steve) second wife was Stefanbra's half sister, Mary (Marja) (Maria) Berezowsky Duniec. She was widowed with three children. Stefan brought them to Canada in the 1920's.
I have recently found out about Stefan's brothers and sisters, what I have is as follows...Brother John, Sister Katherine, Sister Dorothy (or Doris) (in Ukrainian it is "Evdokia". Doris married Metro Horbal
Stefan's parents were Theodor Mickelow and Mary Terlecka.
Your Great Grandfather was born in the States around the same time my husband's Great Grandfather was born in Galicia.
Yes there must be a connection, but finding it, that's the key!!! Perhaps some of this information might match up with yours ?? Look forward to hearing from you!

I know my grandfather had brothers named John, Paul, George, Stephen and sisters named Katherine, Annie, and Mary. His mother was Mary Sofranko b. Austria. I can't prove his father Stephen Stanley Micklow I was born in Fayette Co. PA. It was on of his son's marriage records. My aunt has told me that when they went to Ellis Island she seen his father on the book, spelled Mickelow. Stephen also went by Steve. My Micklow's are Catholic but I can't get any records from the Roman Catholic Church.I know they was here before 1898 cause my grandfather Andrew Edward was born in Greensburg, Westmoreland Co. PA.

I am trying to figure out the connection...if there is one. Your great uncle you have information about him? year of birth? etc.? was he older or younger than Andrew? and the brothers and sisters ...any info on them, who the women married? where they resided, were they all in the states and it's just the great grandfather you aren't sure of his place of birth?
So many of the names match here that it would be hard to believe that somewhere there isn't a connection....also noting that with the translation of the language along the way, sometimes what is on what is considered legal documents wasn't always tranlated properly.
