Surnames: Zutautas
I am trying to find someone who was in Siberia, perhaps in the 1950's. He worked in the mines. His name is/was Algirdas Dominic Zutautas (b: 03/11/1916 in Chicago), he went to Lithuania with his family when he was young (his parents were born in Lithuania), he then joined the Lithuania Air Force during WWII and from there went to Siberia. His sister (Mary), my mother-in-law, who is now 91, came back to Chicago in 1940 when she was 20 and never saw/heard from him or her mother again.

Any way to find out what happened to him - if he remained in Siberia, moved, etc.? Mary said she knows he got married but has no idea what his wife's name was, etc.

I have some volumes of Lietuvos Gyventoju Genocidas, about victims of Soviet terror, WW2 era. I got these from the Genocide Museum in Vilnius. There is a listing of Algirdas Domas Zutautas, b. 1916 son of Domas, resided Telsiuose (I'm not fluent in Lithuanian, so not sure what the town name ending means), a civil servant, arrested 7/15/1947, imprisoned in Vilnius, sentenced 2/14/1948 to 10 years in a labor camp. He was exiled 5/24/1957. there is no mention that he returned or died.

Do you know his mother's name? If you would like me to send you a scan of the page, let me know. It is in Lithuanian.

I am Rasa Batrusaityte. Algirdas-Domas Zutautas was my grandfather. He was maried with my grandmother Anastazija and had a daughter Ruta Zutautaite- my mother.
If you'd write me to baltrusaityterasa@gmai.com, i could ask to my mother and tell you more about our family and Domas Zutautas,

I can assist in finding any existing/published contact information, military and family records, surviving relatives and adoption details. The list is not complete, every story is unique and takes the search in a whole new direction. It's a formula I try to solve with a given number of known and unknown variables. My hope is only that the unknown variables do not overwhelm the search.

Feel free to email me any information about your search to raspusha@gmail.com

George,

I'd suggest you join the Lithuanian genealogy group on Yahoo at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LithuanianGenealogy/

It's a much more active group that the one you posted your message on.

Since Lithuanian was occupied by Russia (1795-1918), your Lithuanian place name would be listed as being part of Russia (Russland).

It appears the place name is written using a German spelling (e.g., SCHW). My educated guess is that it is the town of S^veks^na in Lithuanian. It is located southeast of Klapeida and 21 kilometers east of Silute. The 2001 census listed it as having 2,053 inhabitants.

Here is the URL for the town's entry in the Lithuanian Wikipedia.

http://lt.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%A0v%C4%97k%C5%A1na

Hope this helps.

Tom S.

Many, many thanks Tom for your help. Will join the Lithuanian group as you suggest. The name came from the Hamburg Passenger lists to the USA so you are right, German spelling? At least I have a thread to hold onto now. Thanks again. Georgea (female)
