In late May, 1869, the pregnant Maria Weichel and her husband George were attcked by Indians near where Denmark, Kansas now stands. George was killed and Maria along with Susanna Alderdice were carried away by the Indians. Later that summer in northeastern Colorado territory, the 5th Cavalry, lead by the not yet famous scout, William F. Cody, attacked the Indians and attempted to recover Maria Weichel and Susanna Alderdice. Susanna was killed and Maria was wounded and rescued. She was sent east after recovering and had her child at Omaha, Nebraska in December of 1869. She later married John Mantz and in 1880 they are found living in San Franciscio. THe following death notice was found for Maria:

In August you posted an obit for Maria's daughter which gives her burial info as: Fruitvale Chapel of the Clarence N. Cooper Mortuary, 1500 Fruitvale Avenue, Oakland. Interment, Mt. View Cemetery. Maybe Maria is buried there too or maybe the records for her daughter would give you a hint.

I checked the records for Mountain View Cemetery, to 1915 and she is not buried there, Also checked the east bay papers for a her death, and the notice was the the same as the San Francisco paper.

It has been found that she was originally buried in the now defunct Odd Fellows Cemetery.

In 1933 her ramains were moved to Green Lawn cemetery, Colma, CA.
