Hannah Catherine Porter born April 10, 1860(?) died on January 19, 1939. Dauther of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Porter, had a brother named Isaac Porter. She married Peter Lincoln Sears in 1887. She had six children. John and William Sears, Lucy Edith Sears (VanMeter), Miranda Elizabeth Sears (Shreve), Mary Susan Sears, Alice Augustina Sears. If you are related, or have any information regarding this family line, it would be greatly appreciated. my african american ancestry is from the hinton or union area - it has been extremely difficult to get any information - james albert porter was my great grandfather - i guestimate that he was born around 1825-35 - one of his sons, my grandfather, john a. porter, was born in hinton or union 1856(-1929); james was married to winifred ross (her father was caucasian); john had at least one sibling, a brother, albert born in 1858(-1910) - i just cannot seem to get beyond these few facts...does anyone know of any ross family in the area...or possible a porter family (the last name had to come from someone...) thanks

RootsWeb Family Trees: George L. PORTER (1810, VA - before 1870, Pendleton Co., WV) m. 5 Nov. 1829, Pendleton Co., [W]VA, Sarah TINGLER, b. 1812. Children, probably b. Pendleton Co.:

Hiram (ca. 1830/1 - 15 Sep. 1900, Falls, WV) m. 12 D 1853, Elizabeth SHIRLEY.

Sarah E., b. 1852.

Considering a marriage date late in 1853, the PORTER families of Grant County in 1880 were likely Hiram and his sons. Censuses from 1860 & 1870 should help. Grant adjoins Pendleton Co., WV, on the northeast. Hardy Co. is east, just across from Shenandoah Co., VA. Note that the family didn't necessarily move, the change from VA to WV on the births occurs when the state was formed.

--My line is from Peter PORTER, listed in Peter W. COLDHAM's Complete Book of Emigrants, 1607 -1660: At the Eastern Shore, [VA], Petter PORTER, 1624; & at Elizabeth City, 1625, Peeter PORTER, 20, [came on] the Tiger, 1621. There's a book on Peter's family, but the first generations are sketchy.

I am Miranda Elizabeth Sears (Shreve) granddaughter. She had 4 children; Nellie Shreve (Tichnell);Charles L. (instead of R) Shreve, Victor Ray Shreve; and Emily C Shreve (Shreve, Halterman). Nellie married Streward Tichnell, Charles married Edith Virginia Haslacker, Victor (Ray) married Dorothy Haslacker. Edith and Dorothy were first cousin. Charles was my dad. I'm not sure where they originated either, but I think from Lamansville, WV. If you can give me any info please let me know.

My Grandmother was Lucy, who married Jason VanMeter. My mother was Dorothy Catherine VanMeter Fuller. I remember Miranda. I believe we took Grandma Lucy to visit with her whenever we went to Petersburg. Catherine VanMeter Phares is my cousin, If you are still in the Petersburg area, you might know her.
I have a couple photos posted which I believe one may be Miranda.
