THE GREATHOUSE FAMILY OF BUTLER CO. AND WARREN CO., KY.

Samuel B. Greathouse, Sr., b 1768 in Maryland, came to Clark County, Ky. by 1796 when he married a cousin, Susannah Greathouse, dau of John Greathouse. Susannah was b in 1778 in Va. By 1799 Samuel and Susannah were in Warren Co., Ky. where they lived until their deaths: Samuel in 1851 and Susannah in 1864.

Samuel became a Baptist preacher shortly after the turn of the 19th century, according to The History of Kentucky Baptists, by J. H. Spencer, Volume 2, page 114, History of the Green River Association, which states Samuel became a preacher after becoming alarmed about the safety of his soul because of the following circumstances: At a house-raising, he was carrying up one of the corners of the building, when a fork, with which the man on the ground pushed up the logs, split open and allowed the log to roll back, by which two men were instantly killed. "what would have become of my soul if I had been one of those men?", soliloquized Mr. Greathouse. He was soon afterward baptized and entered into the constitution of the Bays Fork Church, located about eight miles east of Bowling Green, Ky. He was then set apart to the ministry. He was a Baptist minister for many years and performed hundreds of marriages in addition to other activities.

Samuel Greathouse obtained a land grant in Warren County on 28 Aug 1799 consisting of 200 acres of land. It states "Certificate #2021 granted by commissioners in 1798 agreeably to an act for encouraging granting relief to soldiers..... " Samuel is on Warren County tax lists beginning in 1799, along with these Greathouses: John, John Sr., Elizabeth, and Harmon.

Sarah Jane's ancestry has been traced back to the emigrant, John Marrs from Scotland about 1760 to Va., whose sons Hugh and William are in Logan Co., Ky. in the late 1700's.

Surnames: Elleman, Elamon, Eleman, Elloman, Elliman, Elimon,
Hi,
Thank you for the extensive posting on the Greathouse family.
I am trying to confirm the parentage of James Elamon. Do you have anything specific besides the census notation of a Georgia birthplace? There is a family Jesse and Winaford Eleman that were in Sumner Co., TN in 1838 with school age children. My great grandfather, George Eleman, was one of the boys. Other sons included William and a James. Jesse was born in SC and probably ties into the Quaker Elleman family. There is also a John who lived in Sumner and may have been a relative. There is a Benjamin who is buried in the Briley Cemetary in Sumner.

Thus, the family outline so far appears to be:
Jesse Eleman and Winaford ___________
William Eleman m. Edia (b. Ky)
George Eleman (Elimon)m. Samantha Boyd (Franklin Co, IL) my line
John Eleman m. Mary
Benjamon Elleman m.
James Elamon m. Catherine Horn

Jesse and family remained in
Robertson Co. TN through the 1850 census.
Then they moved on to Mulhlenberg Co., Ky in 1860.
By 1870, old Jesse is no longer. The group below is in
Franklin Co., IL
William and Edia (all their children b. KY)
George and new wife Samantha
William's daughter Nancy m. Harrison Legg (m. Sumner Co TN)

The Elleman's originate in early 1700s in PA as part of the Quaker immigration. The go NC>SC>TN>Darke Co., Ohio.
Splinter family groups go to IL, IN.

If you have any information, even legends I would really be appreciative. Thanks again. Lynda Elimon LEsong@comcast.net
