To G. Batson and whomever it may concern: I have been researching my Saunders line and have a good deal of information on it. The first Julius Saunders I am able to locate was born in Albemarle County Va, between 1720 to 30 and married Jemima Woodward of Williamsburg Parish. They had a son, Julius Saunders, some say born in Albemarle County, others say new Kent County Virginia, born in 1758 and died in Bedford County Virginia in either 1821 or 1836. He married twice I think, first a Jane Hughes from whom there were 8 children. The Bedford County records show a Julius Saunders Sr. marrying a Charlotte Hudson or Hutson in 1834, and there are two estate appraisals in the records, in 1825 and in 1836. James R. and Mary B. Saunders were the executors appointed to carry out the will of Julius Saunders. Then there is a Julius Saunders Jr. in the records, who married Rebecca Turner and were the parents of another Julius Saunders whom I believe to have been my great grandfather. That Julius had a brother John who moved to Kentucky, and his son returned to Pittsylvania County to marry Bettie Lee Wooding, sister of the girl Julius Saunders married, Susan C. Saunders. In other words, an uncle and his nephew names Saunders married two Wooding sisters. That Julius and Susan had my grandfather, Julius Roy Saunders, who had my father, Julius Roy Saunders, who had me, Julius Roy Saunders. I can fill in the flesh to these bones. The Mary Saunders who married Alexander Howard and was the daughter of Julius Saunders of Bedford County Virginia could be the executor of the estate of Julius Saunders in about 1836 if that date ties in. Let me know if this makes sense to you. Regards, Julius Roy Saunders, Jr. (IIIrd).

My grandfather was Robert Emmett Saunders, son of William Saunders and Prudence Wimmer.
To my knowledge, the family immigrated from West Va. to the Bedford County, Va. area. The first in this country were George Saunders, b. 1842 wife Mary Lyona Broce. Immigrated from Ireland. I have other info.
Good luck in your search.

Very late reply, only oh, five years after the fact. Your Julius seems to be my G(6) Grandfather. My line is from another son, Philemon. He fought in the Revolution and is buried in Glasgow, Barren Co., Ky. The line traces to Chamblissburg in the 19th century and an area in Bedford Co., Va. known as Saunder's Grove. There is also a Saunders Rd. (or was) Named after the family. Census records from the 1800's reveal with a little probing that most living on that Rd. (including a fair walk from it) were Saudners or married into the Saunders family. I am interested in filling out decendant lineage for Julius (3rd, 4th, 5th cousins, etc.) so any info you have is apprecieted. Saudner's Grove Chruch of The Brethren printed a fairly good book for those interested in Saunder's Family history. The Chruch still exists. They may be able to help any interested.

Eric,

Philemon was my 5 G Grandfather. Do you have him married to Jemima Greer? If so do you know who her parents were? Also do you have decendants of their other children? I decend from Joannah "Annie". Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Linda,

I have not delved too deeply into the other children of Philemon. My grandmother's lineage traces back to his son Littleberry. I have a lot of info on this line but the best documentation is from the 19th century. Jemima (or Jermima) traces from a family called Grierson in Scotland but I am having trouble finding my records. There were a couple of family trees that included this on ancestry.com but they had a few irreconcilible differences. I decided to leave it empty on Jemima Greer's line until and if I can locate a contact in Scotland to verify anything.

Hi again Linda,

I should have mentioned it but it slipped my mind. If you know your lineage to the 1800's there were three or so typhoid plagues that hit Bedford Co., Va. during the century. Bedford county kept rescpectible death records which can be found at the Virginia Public Library in Richmond as well as many transcriptions online at the library's website. Many of the records include Parents, spouces, and children. It could help to give names to those "unknown child" entries and maiden names for the brides.
