My grandfather left Ireland between 1900 - 1924
His name was McDaid but when he arrived in Scotland he changed it to McDevitt.

roughly as follows - the original correct name in gaeilge(irish) is "mac daibheid" which when pronounced sounds in english like "mac devitt". the english invaders decreed that irish should be illegal in ireland so people with the name "mac daibheid" were forced to become "mcdaid" and thereafter transmorged into "mc devitt".

hope this helps.
