I pray that you and I are looking for info on the the same James M. Bates b.1877 in Letcher Co KY. If so I think he is the 1/2 brother to my grandmother Hortense Lee. Is he the son of Henry C Bates and Rachel Lee and was he a sherriff and died in Crowder Oklahoma? Even if he is not my grandmother's half brother they lived in the same house in 1880.
See here:

1880 Letcher Co KY Census
#328 Bates Henry C. 35 K K K farmer
Rachel 37 V V V
Marget 06 K K V see Margret's birth record Letcher KY mother's name is Rachel Lee
James M. 03 K K V
Belle D. 12/1879 <1 K K V
Bates John 27 K K K
Martha 25 K K K sister
James 17 K K K brother
* Lee Hortence 19 V V V servent (or stepdaughter?)
Irven 12/1879 <1 K K V boarder

I know Hortense is listed as a servant here but I think this is because it is her occupation. Hortense's 1861 birth record in Russell Co VA lists her mother as Rachel Lee.

Oh I hope this is the same family as yours

I am sorry... this James M Bates is not the same one as mine. when I first started out I was told My James' family was from Kentucky. However, that is not so... they were from Arkansas, Georgia and South Carolina.

I hope you will find you family. I have been working on this for 2 1/2 years. It has been an interesting ride that is for sure.

Hi Pam, thanks for the reply.

I am still working on who Rachel Lee is.

Thanks to Brian Caudill who sent me info from an 1870 "Annotated" Letcher County KY census book, Henry and Rachel were listed as follows:

Precinct #2
108 BATES,
Henry C. 25 KY (s/o James Bates & Elizabeth Adams)
Rachel 28 KY (d/o David Lee & Sarah Taylor)

I need to look into the census further to prove or disprove this and to see who her other family members are.

any ideas?
thanks
Kristie

Thank you for your reply. by going with her age on the census Rachel Lee would have been born about 1843 in Virginia. Her daughter Hortense Lee was born in Russell County Virginia in 1861. At one time or another Rachel Lee lived in Roanoke Virginia. Rachel would have been about 18 years old when her daughter was born. There was no father listed on Hortense's birth record so Maybe Rachel was not married yet. Now I am sure that Rachel Lee married Henry Bates in KY on March 13, 1870 and had several Bates children.... but I have been given other names for her husbands from the children of Hortense and Joseph Reynolds such as Jim Turner and Isaac Friley. Seems like I should be able to find a Rachel Lee listed on the 1860 Russell County Census since Hortense her daughter was born there in 1861 but no luck yet.

1880 Letcher County Kentucky Census

#328 Bates Henry C. 35 K K K farmer
Rachel 37 V V V
Marget 06 K K V see birth record Letcher KY mother's name is Rachel Lee
James M. 03 K K V
Belle D. 12/1879 <1 K K V
Bates John 27 K K K brother
Martha 25 K K K sister
James 17 K K K brother
* Lee Hortence 19 V V V servent (or stepdaughter?) 1861 birth Record Russell Co VA lists her mother as Rachel Lee
Irven 12/1879 <1 K K V boarder (son of Hortense and "Buddy" Baker)

Thanks for your time with all of this
Kristie
