How do I tell which immagration record is correct?

How do I tell which immagration record is correct?

My search results for my great grandfather brought up three different ships all listing his name and the lady he traveled with. Two of the boats arrived in July 1906 and one in June. Two records have their names crossed out and the one where they are not, the boat only has 4 passengers.

Is there an explanation as to why he was crossed out or why he may be listed on all 3 ships, when clearly the timeline of all records make that a physical impossibility? Did they maybe go from one boat to another? Should I assume the record that does not have their names crossed out is the correct one?

Ship's manifests were made out in port before the ship left. I've seen cross-outs before. They happen when someone buys tickets but then doesn't actually make it on the boat (could be due to illness). Hopefully, the boat where your relatives' names were not crossed out was the last of the three.

Another possibility is clerical error. If the clerk had several manifests on his (likely) desk and just wrote in the wrong one.

Yes, the one where they were not crossed out is almost certainly the one they traveled on.

On the one that is not crossed out, the age is incorrect.. Just an error?

Perhaps. Or the age you think is right is an error.

Good answer Cyndi. mpalmeri1980, the forum cannot evaluate the correctness of any aspect of an immigration record for someone about whom nothing has been shared, not even his name! You might be looking at the wrong passenger manifest(s); the forum has no way of judging. In general, a crossed out name means the person did not board the ship. In general, errors happen in all kinds of records.
