Researching family of Josiah (1760-1825?)
and Sarah Harrell. Josiah was active in Maury
County, Tennessee, supervising the building of
a road there. At least two sons, Seth
Graves and Peter.

Seth Graves Harrell was born 23 Mar 1802 in Surry County, North
Carolina and died 26 May 1882 in LeFlore County,
Oklahoma. He was a Mason and a Methodist
minister. He lived in North Carolina, Maury
County, Tennessee (1825-1831), Marion
County, Alabama (1834-1851), and LeFlore County,
Oklahoma (1878-1882). Seth married Mourning
Desdemona Daggett in 1830. They had eleven children.

Peter Harrell shows up on a land deed in 1825 and on
the 1820 census for Maury County, Tennessee.
He was born 1794-1802, had a wife and one daughter
under the age of 10 in 1820.

Would like to hear from anyone who is also
searching for this family.

Hello, my name is Susan, and I am a decendant of the Harrell's from Texas, and prior to that Tennessee. I am just learning about my family beyond my GGG grandparents Joab B. Harrell b 1813 in Tennessee and his wife Arietta May.

If these names connect with your family, please contact me at
thanks so much

Hello Heather, I have located my family to Joab Butler Harrell in Texas. I have nothing further back, but noted that your family were Masons and Methodists, which mine are, and they were also born in Tennessee, with many of the family members also. Could you write me at I would be very interested in communicating with you about this. Because of the Biblical names and the Methodist/Mason ties, I believe it is possible we are in some way related.

My family also were Methodists and Masons. I believe they came from Tenn. originally. Did you see the name David Campbell Harrell in your research?

I haven't seen any Harrells with the name of David at all (in my research...I'm sure there are plenty out there). But I only have info on half of Seth's children. My Harrells seem to have left Tennessee for Alabama between 1830 and 1850.

Am also looking for Seth Graves Harrell, my GGGGrandfather. Dau. Sarah Frances married to William Fielding Wigginton.Had Charles Lewis, he had Claude Trulove, he had John Henry , he had me. I was told that Sarah F. and Fielding moved with Seth to Ok. and have found her atleast in the 1900 census . My question is, where were they in 1870? Not in the Marion Co. Al. listing. Do appreciate your sharing info on the Harrell side. By the way, Seth had a Sarah Harrell living with him as 90 years old in 1850.Al census. Mother?

Surnames: Harrell, Wigley

It has been so long since I wrote that first message. Several things have changed. I will answer your questions as best as I can.

First, I don't know where most of the family is in 1870. In 1869, Seth Graves Harrell was appointed as a Methodist minister to Skullyville, in the Choctaw Nation in Oklahoma. However, according to his obituary, he did not move there until 1871. The only one of his children that I have found in 1870 is Malinda Eveline Harrell, who married Solomon Walker Wigley. She is living in Freestone County, Texas in 1870.

Second, I think the Sarah Harrell, age 90 in 1850 is his mother. However, the censuses seem to agree that she was born 1770-1774, as was Josiah (one of the things that have changed since my first post). I can only guess that maybe she felt the extra age would make her seem wiser, or maybe someone just guessed her age.

Heather....did any of Seth's children stay in Al. after he left. Have found some of the boys in the census prior to his leaving, but not after. Could you share any further info on them that you might have. Thanks, Joan
