My family's surname is McLeod, coming from Jamaica, WI. I was wondering if anyone had any information on McLeod's that travelled to the West Indies from Scotland.

Dear Renee McLeod,

I am Patrick McLeod, son of Horace McLeod and Grandson of Lionel McLeod. I would like to help you create our Genealogy for our children and grandchildren. How is Aunt Pearl doing? I hope that she is well. Tell her that you have heard from Patrick.

I look forward to further contact with you.

Best regards,

Patrick McLeod

Several of the M(a)cLeods who settle in Jamaica during the late 1780s were former soldiers that had emigrated to North Carolina between 1765 and 1775. (Several of them had actually been stationed in Jamaica during their military careers.) They were Loyalists during the American Revolution and many lost their lands in the Carolinas.

What's not well known is that many of the MacLeods did not support Charles Stewart during the Jacobite Rising. Indeed Capt. John MacLeod of Pabbay and St. Kilda led a group of tacksmen who enjoined the clan chief not to support Charles.

Many of these Macleods went to North Carolina where they were leaders of the Highland Loyalists both before and after the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge. Several ended up in Jamaica after the American Revolution, including one who became the factor of a plantation there.

I am descended from a Niel McLeod who was born on the Isle of Raasay in 1724, captured at the Battle of Culloden in 1745 and transported by the Hanoverian Government to either Jamaica or Barbados in 1747 on board the 'Frere'. There were several McLeods transported at that time. The Raasay McLeods supported Prince Charles Edward Stuart but the McLeods of Dunvegan did not.

Hi I am Brianna McLeodmy great grandfathers name is Lascelves McLeod and his father was Gustavos Barthalamuel McLeod(sorry if I misspelled his middle name). Gustavos had six brothers one of which was named Francisco or Fernando, who had at least 20 children. They lived in Linstand, Jamaciain a big mansion that had a creek in the back and the land surrounding it was citrus and fruit trees. The McLeods that I know of was a white man that would ride on a pure white horse and he married a pure Indian jamacian woman. They moved up to spanish town or Bellas Gate area. Children of Gustavos McLeod are spread throughout the areas of Canida, Florida, and the Cayman Islands . We had a family reunion In 2001 in kingston, jamacia. we also have alot of family in england. Please reply with any information that you have about my family, I have been searching but have found very little. Attached is the McLeod Scottish crest, being as though the McLeods I know of came from Scotland.

Thank you,
Brianna

This is very interesting. Is there any way to find out which Macleods these were? My ancestor is a Norman Macloed. Reputedly born on Skye in 1765 but ended up in Jamaica by 1793 at least. Family oral history says he was fighting for the British. He married a Catherine Lythgow (local Jamaican girl) in 1793.
