I am looking for any information on a George William Sydnor,my great-great grandfather. According to the 1900 Carroll County Tennesse census he was born in Virginia October 1851. He married Roxie Ann Wilkerson at some point and moved to Tennessee. He and Roxie had five children: Richard, Juila, Robert, Roe and George, all born in Tennessee in or after 1876. I can find Roxie's parents, J. W. and Barbery Wilkerson on the 1850 Virginia census living in Mecklenberg County. Roxie was born in 1850 but is not listed on the census. She died in Tennessee in 1894. Barbery Wilkerson lived with the Sydnors in Tennessee until her death in 1912. As far as I know George does not show up on any census records in Tennessee until 1900 and I cannot find any marriage records or census records in Virginia. If anyone has any information that could help me please let me know.

Thanks,

Clay Sydnor

Hello Clay,

I see your lineage from the Tennessee area. There only a handful of Sydnors that I know of, move to Tennessee. This is a hard to find. I have a George Sydnor son of Capt. William Thweatt Sydnor who moved to Nashville, Tennessee on Nov. 24, 1830. I don't have dates on George Sydnor or nor his marriage? His son was Robert Jeremy Sydnor born Feb. 6, 1881 buried McKenzie Enon Baptist Church and married Fredonia Hedgecock born Sept. 10, 1885. Their children are: John William Sydnor born Sept. 18, 1905 died July 6, 1963, Carroll County, Tennessee. He married Betty Lois Barker Clarence Sydnor married Lester Newhill. I have many children of John W. Sydnor Betty L. Barker if you are interested. Does any of these names click? to you? I certainly would like to know your lineage? and information of what you have on your lineage? I'm a genealogist for over twenty five years and my tree has grown over twenty thousands names. This is not all Sydnors but a good majority of it. I also want to mentioned there were a few Sydnors move to Tennessee from Kentucky area as well. But I strongly believe that you line is coming from Dinwiddie County, Va. area. Please let me know this helps and I will continue to help you out. thanks posting your message, Bradley K. Sydnor of Phoenix, Az.

Brad,

Thanks so much for your information. The George Sydnor you have is the one I'm looking for. The folks at the Tennessee State Library Archives have recently found his death certificate and are in the process of sending it to me. My family tree past George has been a mystery as I could not find any Sydnors that has similar names to his family on any Tennessee census publications until George and his family showed up in the 1900 Carroll County, Tennessee Census. Robert Jerome Sydnor was my Great Grandfather and Robert Clarence Sydnor (died August 11, 1981) was my grandfather.

My knowledge of George William Sydnor (1851 VA - 1932 Carroll Co.,TN)is somewhat limited. He was married to Roxie Ann Wilkerson (1850 Mecklenburg Co. VA - 1894 Carroll Co.,TN). They are buried at Union Academy Baptist Church which is located in the Big Buck Community of Carroll County. They had five children, all born in Tennessee; Richard (born 3/1876), Julia (3/1878), Robert (2/1881), Roe L. (2/1885) and George (4/1890).

Please let me know if there is any more information you might be looking for. If you have anything further on my line in Virginia and back please let me know.

Clay

Brad,

I received the death certificate for George William Sydnor from the Tennessee State Library and Archives. It shows he was born 10/24/1851 in Virginia but does not show a county. His parents were Richard Sydnor and Julia Wall who were also both born in Virginia.

I hope this information helps, please let me know if you have anything.

Thanks,

Clay Sydnor

Brad,

Did this family generally stay in Virginia or was it part of the Sydnor family that moved on into Kentucky? I'm still trying to figure out when and where George William married Roxie Ann Wilkerson. Are there any books out there that would give some more details about this line?

Sincerely,

Clay Sydnor
