I'm interested in getting data on the fahter of Valentine Whitman, also spelled "Wightman", who was John Wightman (1599-1669). I have seen where he came to America with four sons, Valentine Whitman (1627-1701) being the eldest. There seems to be very little data concerning John Wightman (1599-1669) either in England or in Rhode Island. I've seen the genealogy of the Wightman family but I'm interested in particular in John Wightman's personal family history.

JOHN WIGHTMAN of Wickford, son of Edward Wightman and Frances DARBYE. John Wightman was born on 7 Jan. 1599 at Wickford, and died in 1669. He married Katharine Frye on October 25, 1627 at Burton, Dorset, England who was born 1601 and died before 1654.The John Weightman you mentioned was born 16 April 1674 and died 1 April 1750. He married (1) Jane Bentley (2) Virtue Gardner. So you see these were two diferent men with the same name and you were confusing the two.
John Wightman came to America with four (4) of his five (5) sons from England and reached Newport, Rhode Island in 1654. The elder son, Valentine Wightman (Whitman) (1628-1701), my ancestor, was already in America in 1648 where he settled in Wickford in Narragansett country Rhode Island. In the Quidnesset section of Wickford his youngest son, George Wightman settled on a farm. It seems that when the family came to America in 1654 and they had considerable wealth.

Hi Doris,

Don't know if there is any connection. I am trying to find more information on a Leonard WHITMAN b. 23 Apr 1777 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
His parents were Valentine WHITMAN b. Oct 1733in Germany (?), d. 16 Mar 1803 in N.S., m. 15 Feb 1757 Maria Eva BACHMAN (b. 1740 in Germany(?), d. 22 Mar 1786 in N.S.

I don't have any info. on ancesters of either parent. Any suggestions?

The Valentine name caught my eye, even though I know this is generations later, might there still be a tie?

Hi y'all.. I'm interested in knowing if this Valentine Wightman ..came to the new lands with Rogers Williams .. you say and show Valentine was already in Wickford in 48. The question is ..was he invited by Williams to return with him after Williams went to get the Charter for the Plantation .is there any indication that Valentine was one of the originals accompanying Williams when he first arrived in 1630s? According to reports there where close followers to Williams and may have been part of the group that fled Boston or Mass. to go and settle somewhere else. I'm sure there is are ship logbook manifest archived somewhere that would give the passengers roster .. Like the one's to which Williams went to England and back on for the procuring of the Charter. Peace ..Dan..email danthewightman at hotmail.com Ps .. you say their were several John's there were many Valentines also ..Edward the martyr had a brother named Valentine. my dads name is James Alden Wightman he goes by Alden and is a Baptist Minister.. go figure.

I hope the poster of this is still well,,live and kicking .. You say you are of the linage of Valentine the Grandson of Edward.. you know exactly when he came to the Colonies ? Did he come back with Rogers in 1644 when he went for his charter or when he came back of getting the Royal charter I believe 1648, One site I see says he was a Indian interpreter. I'm pretty sure seeing he would had been about 3 or 4 when Rogers first came to the Mass. Bay Colony and 20 then in 48. Ok so this might be more accurate.. John the son of Edward would been 13 when his farther was burned. John would had been about 32 or 33 when Rogers Williams first came then an 28 or 29 when Valentine was born.. SO I would say that he was 16 or so when Williams came beck with the charter and a good chance he did come here then .
