Slovak Church Record Discontinuities

All,

I could not find specifics on this trying to search the messages... I’m trying to understand some discontinuities in Slovak Church records and am hoping someone has run across similar and can help me understand. The following is the basic timeline of events the church records show:

1. Anna Kul’ka born to Janos Kul’ka and Maria Radvansky (Address Tarnov 5)
2. Catarina Kul’ka born to Janos Kul’ka and Maria Gress (Address Tarnov 5), November 12, 1893
3. Maria Radvansky (wife of Janos Kul’ka – Tarnov 5) dies, November 29, 1893
4. Janos Kul’ka (Tarnov 5) marries Maria Gress (Tarnov 2), July 2, 1894
5. Janos Kul’ka born to Janos Kul’ka and Maria Gress (Tarnov 5), October 9, 1895

Anna Kul’ka is my great-grandmother. I have not been able to locate the marriage record of Janos Kul’ka and Maria Radvansky.

What confuses me is the Catarina Kul’ka – Gress record. The record says she is legitimate, yet she was born before Maria Radvansky dies, and before Janos Kul’ka and Maria Gress got married. Is it possible she was actually the daughter of Maria Radvansky (who died shortly after the birth) and the church got the records wrong? Since it appears Maria Gress lived a couple houses away, could she have been helping and the church logged the wrong name?

I have encountered a similar mix-up with another ancestor where the marriage is logged correctly, but the wrong maiden (last) name is listed for the mother in the first couple birth records (right address, right father). It is not even her mother's maiden name (found in wedding record), because that shows up in some later birth records.

Thank you for any insight that might be provided.

Best Regards,
Brian
