I am having great success with Ancestry.com.au in finding links to family members. My focus now is to get hold of the documented proof eg certificates and or copies of the registers. What is the best way to go about this?

That's impossible to answer in detail without knowing where in the world your family lived.

I am mostly after Australian records.

You will have more success if you post on the appropriate Australian state board and give the details of your ancestors.
