In an Obituary, Billy H. Smith's son Paul
was living in Freeport, LA. Also found
referances to Freeport, Louisiana on
www.goggle.com but it never said which
parish, that it was in.

I thought that Sulfer, La., was in Cacasieu
Parish, I know that Lake Charles is.

Thanks anyway.
Harold

RIGHT YOU ARE SULFUR AND LAKE CHARLES HAVE NOT MOVED INTO DIFFERENT PARISHES.

HOWEVER, YOU GOT TO (AS A WISE OLD GENTLEMAN TOLD ME ONCE) RTP - READ THE PAPER - I STATED PORT SULFUR. I THINK, FREEPORT-MCMURAN'S (SIC?)LIQUID SULFUR PIPELINE FROM SULFUR PRODUCTION IN THE NEARBY WATERS OF THE MARSHES (FREEPORT) WAS PIPED TO THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER FOR LOADING ONTO SHIPS HENCE THE NAME PORT SULFUR.

WHERE WAS THE SULFUR PRODUCTION RIG - OUT OF CAMERON OR GRAND ISLE - THAT WAS BROUGHT DOWN AND IS BEING USED I THINK AS A ARTIFICIAL REEF?

NOT BAD FOR A BOY FROM RAPIDES PARISH HUH?

Thanks for setting me straight. That goses to show you
us poor folks from Vernon Parish, don't know out State.

My Cousin Billy H. Smith died in 1975 in Orange, Texas;
it said that his son Paul Smith lived in Freeport, Louisiana.
I still would like to know which Parish that it is in. It's
not on the "town and County" thing at rootsweb. It must be
just a community, and not a town.

Thanks a lot
Harold

NORMALLY US CENTRAL LA FOLKS (SUCH AS YOU AND I) ARN'T THAT KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT THE AREA BELOW NEW ORLEANS BUT THE SULFUR MINING AND MOVING PROCESS ALWAYS INTERESTED ME. SUPPOSEDLY THE SULFUR WAS PUMPED OUT IN MOLTEN FORM AND "PIPELINED" MOLTEN OVER TO THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. NEVER DID FIND OUT IF IT WAS LOADED OUT MOLTEN OR COOLED AND LOADED AS A SOLID.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

RICHARD

Nope. It's Freeport. From talking to different people, it must
be a small place down along the Coast somewhere.

Thanks for trying.

There is one more hint that I have to offer. There is a large mining company named Freeport- McMoran Copper and Gold Co. which is headquartered in New Orleans. They own the largest copper mine in the world, and the 2nd largest gold mine. Their mine is in Indonesia. Stock symbol FCX. Good luck.

I looked in the atlas "Roads of Louisiana" which has every small town, village, community and area. There is no Freeport, LA. Several Freetowns. There is Freeport in Texas perhaps?

The only Freeport is that mentioned of the Freeport Sulphur Co. Canal near Port Sulphur (note the correct spelling) which went Southwestardly from the town of Port Sulphur to the now extinct community of Grand Ecaille which is in the marshes of Plaquemines Parish. Perhaps "Freeport" was another name for Grand Ecaille.
