Ottoman Empire

Does anyone know whether the Turks kept accurate records in their empire? I have many family members that emigrated from Syria during the first world war, and I'm wondering where I would even start trying to track them back to the old country.

Records? What type of records?

Am I correct to assume your Syrian family were Christians? Most Syrian and Lebanese descendants I know in Cleveland are Christian.

The church would be the best place to begin, as often times the churches were the official keepers of birth, marriage and death records.

Here is a link to a tutorial regarding research in Syria (which given the present conditions may be difficult)

Also I notice the Lebanon board here at Genforum has many queries re Syrian genealogy. And Ancestry.com has a board dedicated to Syria

Thanks for the links and info. You are correct that the family is Christian. In fact, there is a large Syrian Orthodox church in the town where a large portion of the family eventually settled (Geneva, NY). I'll do some reading from the sources you indicated. One concern is that at this point my father's generation, the first born in the U.S., are all that's left; all of the original immigrants are gone. We are actually related to multiple Syrian families in Geneva through marriages but no one even knows the original family names at this point (they were changed to Anglicized names upon immigration).
