I'd appreciate a look-up for Abel Gridley, b. 7/16/1756 Farmington, CT; d. 8/16/1824 Manlius, NY. Married to Rhoda Hill. Abel enlisted on 5/9/1775, discharged 12/17/1775; re-enlisted 6/24/1776, discharged 12/25/1776; re-enlisted 4/1/1777, discharged 5/15/1777. He served with the CT Militia. Thanks.

Hi Bob,
Good news, bad news, I'm afraid. The DAR Patriot Index did have an Abel Gridley listed, but he's not yours. However, he may the father of yours.

The Abel Gridley we had was born 9-28-1729 in CT and has service as a Private from CT. He was married to Hannah Clark and died 2-24-1808 in CT. He had no pension.

Perhaps with further research, you can establish your line to this older Abel. As for the younger, it just means that no woman has to date joined DAR using the younger as their patriot ancestor.

Good luck with your research.

Mary D.

Yes, I have this Abel in my 'tree', altho with different birth and death dates - he is from a different branch than the Abel in my direct line. Thanks for the look-up.

Question: I have another 18 or so Gridley's who fought in the Revolutionary War. Is it possible to submit their names, along with the information you usually seek, to do look-ups? Or would it be easier to see if you have any Gridley's listed, since it is not a common surname? If this is too much of an imposition, I will understand.

Thanks for your time and dedication to the DAR look-up project.

Hi Mary, many thanks for supplying all those Gridley names! The only ones that don't fit my tree, are: Hosea and Rezin.

Question on Samuel 1696-97, I have Deacon Samuel Gridley born on that date, but wonder how he would have been involved with the Revolutionary War - he would have been about 79 or 80! I have his date of death as 3/14/1776. Interestingly, he is the father of William, b. 5/6/1732.

Do you want me to supply the additional detail that I have on the Gridley names you provided me, or would you be able to go ahead and send me the data that you have?

Thanks. Bob
