In the course of my family research it has led me to the mention of a town named Goldberg, Custer County, Idaho where an ancestor died. I have been without success in finding its location or how long it existed as a town, etc.
Any help in this regard would be appreciated.

Phil:

Thanks so much for the information. Then, is it anywhere near Salmon, Idaho? Some of Albert Ziegler's descendants live and farm near there in that valley you wrote about. And do you know if there is a map anywhere with the location of Goldberg on it? Do you know also if there is a history of the place and is there a cemetary there?

Just curious as this is a somewhat obscure piece of my family's history.

Thanks again,

jeff

Hi Jeff, noted the postings on Goldberg, ID. I have heard the name
many times in my earlier years (70 years ago!!), but I haven't found
any map with it on now. As I remember, the town was in the
Pahsimeroi (Pa simmer eye) valley through which runs the
Pahsimeroi River. Said river heads in the northern shadow of
Borah Peak, the highest mtn. in Idaho, and runs north throught the
valley and dumps (if there is any left to dump by then) in the Salmon
River at Ellis. The valley is approx. 125 miles ENE if Boise, and
about 20 miles due east of Challis. Write to the "Challis Messenger",
newpaper, at Challis, ID 83226, and I'll bet some one up there
will have some info for you. Good luck. Bob Evans

Hi Jeff - don't know if you located more info on this yet, but here's my input.
Goldburg (note change in spelling) is in the Pahsimeroi Valley in eastern central Idaho. I believe it is in Lemhi county (county seat = Salmon, Idaho.) On my USGS Topo maps, it is on Goldburg Creek, at about 44 deg 23 min N, 113 deg 38 min W at an elevation of over 6200 feet. Patterson is the closest current town, such as it is.
The Challis and Salmon areas were important early gold, silver and lead mining locations in the West. Unfortunately (or fortunately, as the case may be), they never had sufficient transportation available to make them centers of population.

I live in Challis, there are several books about the old days written by Roberta Green, her new one is about Goldburg and the Patterson Area. Might be interesting to you.
