Against Mary Jane's families wishes that they marry.

Mary Jane Leach was the daughter of Mr W. Leach, Clipper Kilnkere, Virginia, County Cavan, Ireland and Jane (Drury) Leach, who came from Greagh, Canningstown, Bailieborough, County Cavan, Ireland, next to Jane Drury in my notes I have formerly Johnston. Mary Jane was born in 1840

George Blair was the son of Samuel Blair, Cohagh, Cootehill, County Cavan and Mary (Halliday) Blair, who came from Tunnyhill, Canningstown, Ballieborough, County Cavan, George was born in 1838 (I'm not sure but he could have been William George, but once again unsure.

What I have been told:
Apparently George Blair and Mary Jane Leach elopted and came out to New Zealand on the "Huntress A" and arrived 21 April 1863, the journey took 5 months.
They did not have any contact, that I am aware of, from their families back in Ireland since arriving in N.Z.
I have been told that Mary Jane came from a wealthy family who had a linen manufacturing business and George was the son of their coachman Samuel Blair. They fell in love and it was against Mary Jane's families wishes that they marry.

They had 12 children, 6 girls and 6 boys, all survived,
James Blair was their 4th child and he was born 8 June 1868.

This is all the records I have - anything on this family would be gratefully appreciated!

You don’t say whether you have details of George and Mary Jane’s marriage. Their marriage was registered in Cootehill Co. Cavan in 1862 Volume 4, page 359. If you get a copy of that it will confirm the fathers names, and occupations, as well as hopefully provide you with other information to trace the family back.

Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church (though if they did really elope that may not be the case here) but if it is her family church then that would be the place to look for her baptism and that of any siblings.

I am not familiar with anywhere called “Clipper Kilkere”. It doesn’t sound quite right somehow, but perhaps someone more familiar with that area will know. Virginia to Bailieborough is about 8 miles and Virginia to Cootehill is about 15 miles. So these places are all reasonably close to each other.
