I am seeking any information relative to Johann Ottens (John Otten). He was a farmer from the Prussian province of Hannover and emigrated to the United States in 1880. He was born on 12 May 1863.

Hello Wayne,
I can't help you with your John Otten, however, that is the name of my grandfather (1893-1984). His grandfather, my gg grandfather, was also John Otten (1828-1892). I was quite excited to read your post because the only information I have about my gg grandfather is that he came to America from Hannover, Germany in about 1850. I found this in the census. I would like to find out what ship he came on as well as more about his home in Germany but I don't have a clue about where to start looking for info. about Germany. Would you be able to give me an idea about where to start looking? Thank you very much!

Sincerely, Maureen Downs

I have some Otten's in my family that lived in Wilstedt, Lower Saxany, Hannover, Prussia(Germany)
Maybe you've already found where to start looking but if not it's worth a try.

Thanks for the information relative to the Ottens in your family. If you have anything else that might be useful, please let me know. It is tough to find info from 150 years ago.

Hello,

I am searching for any family history on the Bülter / Buelter Family. My husband is a descendant of Gerhardt & Catherine "Otten" Buelter / Bülter of Osnabrück, Germany...near Hannover. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Mary Catherine Otten was born July 1826 and came to the USA with her parents in 1846 from the Hannover area. Do you think there is a connection? The Bülters are also from around Hannover.

Thank You!

Hi Linda -

It is difficult to determine whether or not our Ottens are connected although it seems unlikely. My grandfather, John Otten (Johann Ottens) was born in 1863. He came to this country in 1880 from the Prussian province of Hannover in 1880 at the age of 16. As far as I have been able to determine, he came alone.

Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Best regards.

I have found a Anna Maria Borgmann, born Otten, in our family line. She lived in Hesepertwist, Hannover, Prussia, Germany. She married Johann Bernard Borgmann around 1840. We are 99% sure she is the mother of my husband's great grandfather, Johann Albert Borgmann who immigrated to Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio in 1891 and later moved to Butte, Boyd Co., Nebraska.

Dear Maureen,

By now you probably know all there is to know about your ancestors. The message that I am replying to was posted a long time ago! I have a John Otten in my tree, born 1819 in Lingen, Westfalen, Germany. John died in 1890 in Howard County, MD. He came to America with his wife, Ann Adelaide in the 1840's and had 5 children:

Henry John- b. 1844
John William- b. 1843
George- b.1848
John Joseph- b.1850
Mary C.- b.1854, m. Henry F. Simon

Does any of this sound familiar to you. I have a lot more info, but not the ship name or exact date that they arrived and I do not know how many children were born in the US and in Germany.

Thanks!

Michele
