my side of Betterley's lost??

Dear Loren or anyone: I have been observing this sight for 2 years now waiting for anyone to pop up with info on my Betterley connection. It seems that we don't exhist.
For as far back as I can remember we always heard about the family homestead in Vermont. That we had a direct descedent that fought with George Washington; that my uncle had his bugle from that war. The Betterley page has given myself & my oldest daughter the incentive to try & find out anything but we are at a stand still ! My brother has a tremondous amount of family info & keepsakes but will not share it with anyone. He has been to the family cemetary in Vermont & the battle fields in Pennsylvania where relatives fought. My Aunt Mary born in 1916, & my mom born in 1920 are the only ones who's memories I can pick. The phone bills get a little high sometime. Aunt Mary remembers the most as my mom was the baby of 5 children. Unfortunately the family bible was left in a move across town & by the time it was missed it was too late to retrive it. So here goes what I do know:

my Great grandfather: George J. Betterley born in Ohio, we can't find out where
married #1 Mary (Kate) Nolon or Dolon
children: George
William 11/8/1877 in Ohio daughter-Lenore
Mary married Milan Hodgson
married #2Mary Flattery of Boston
children: Charles J. 3/5/1888 my grandfather
married: Gustie M. Swandel Cleveland
kids:Mildred 1909 " no children
George C. " no children
Mary Rita 1916 " spinster
Marcella 1918 "
Grace J. 1920 " my mother

#2 of Mary & George Annie " 1890
#3 " " Florence " 1893
#4 " " Grace " 1895

Now Aunt Mary said when she was a youngster George J. used to go every couple of years back to Vermont to vist his 1/2 brother; but she doesn't remember his name! The kids were sent out of the room when family things were discussed.
Any help is appreciated. DI

Sorry to take so long to reply, but this board hasn't been notifying me of new posts. I wonder if I have found your George. There are some strong coincidences, so see what you think of this lineage:

George Betterley abt 1852 - aft 1927
m. Anne Dolan abt 1851 - 28 Apr 1885
she died in Cleveland, OH
source: Betterley genealogical folder, Brooks Memorial Library, Brattleboro, VT; courtesy of Marge Howe

George Warren Betterley 28 Aug 1815 - 24 Apr 1886
m. Ellen S. NN 11 Nov 1816 - May 1894
buried Williamsville Cemetery, Williamsville, VT
my first wife is descended from his brother Alfred

George Betterley 31 Jul 1790 - 16 Jul 1858
m. Dimmis Whipple 26 Dec 1792 - 2 Mar 1864
buried Milford churchyard, Otsego Co, NY

Thomas Betterley 28 Apr 1751 - 25 Jun 1836
m. Lydia Warren 12 Sep 1752 (or 15 Sep 1751) - 26 Nov 1839
buried Betterley Cemetery, Newfane Twp, Windham Co, VT

Thomas Betterley 17 Nov 1723 - 28 Jul 1774
m. Elizabeth Carson 22 Mar 1732 - 07 Aug 1775
probably buried in Boston, MA

Thomas Betterley abt 1690 - Jun 1729
m. Elizabeth Alden 10 Mar 1695 - 13 Feb 1753
he buried in Edenton, NC and she probably in Boston, MA

William Betterley abt 1665 - unk
m. Elizabeth NN

It is as accurate as can be so far. Thomas Betterley and Lydia Warren moved to VT in about 1780. George Betterley and Dimmis Whipple were born in VT. Their oldest son, George Warren Betterley, was born in VT and moved with them to Otsego Co, NY. He later moved back to VT.

If you haven't yet visited http://www.minnesotacousins.com/ you should check out the Betterley link. I will be adding more info soon on the original Thomas. You can find a lot in the Betterley database. I have no children or further info on George Betterley and Anne Dolan. He and his siblings were:

Marian Betterley abt 1836 - Unk
Franklin Betterley abt 1840 - Unk
Alfred A. Betterley 04 Apr 1842 - 31 May 1927 (Civil War)
George Betterley abt 1852 - aft 1927
m. Anne Dolan abt 1851 - 28 Apr 1885
Ellen Calista Betterley 05 Apr 1852 - 03 May 1858
Philander Chester Betterley 1856 - aft 1927
m. Agnes Janette Armstrong abt 1861 - 03 Nov 1876

Again, as accurate as can be so far. Let me know what you think.

I saw your reply to Loren (he does seem to be the authority on Betterley's), and I saw your sister's address, but I wanted to confirm since I'd heard rumors about home.com. Anyway, I am Edward W. Betterley, Jr. living in Piedmont, SC. My father and his sister Margaret were the last Betterleys born in Vermont to the best of my knowledge - Dad at his maternal grandmothers home in East Dover, and Margaret in Brattleboro. Dad died October of of '01

Sorry, I hit the wrong button before I finished. Anyway, Dad had one brother who had no sons and I have no children, so I'm afraid the Vermont linkage has dried up with me... Something Dad had always wanted me to prevent.

I do have two ex wives, one living in Vermont, the other in SC, but of course they would also be dead ends so to speak. Everything I know, Loren also knows, and has done a far better job of documentation. I have been to one of the Betterley cemetaries, but have never found the one on Betterly [sic] Road. No Betterly's ever lived on Betterly Road -or at the homestead - at least they were all Betterleys on their tombstones. I believe both sites have been well documented by Esther Mott, and one day I will provide the addresses.

Dear Ed; I have read your previous reply on the message board. Anyway she's my daughter not sister & that address is defunk since att went out of the home e-mail hook ups. My great grandfather was George J. Betterley 4/5/1854 who was born in Ohio somewhere (can't find out where) who used to visit his 1/2 brother in Vermont on a regular basis. His first wife was Anne Dolan who died in Cleveland, Ohio in 1885; they had 6 children. (1) George F.4/3/1886 who we believe went to Flordia, (2) William F. 11/8/1877 who married a Swiss woman, they had 1 child a girl, Lenore; (3) John 7/27/1879 don't know anything on him; (4) Warren 9/11/1881 don't know; (5) Mary Ellen 4/1/1883 married a Hodgson & her offspring are still close to the family (6) 4/21/1885 Henry don't know where he went. #2 wife Mary Flattery (my great-grandma) had 4 also who all were born in Cleveland. (1) Charles J.3/5/1888 (my grand-pa),(2) Annie, (3) Florence, & (4) Grace.

The only one living in Ohio during the 1910 census was William and his wife Anna (Baur) who was Swiss and their daughter Lenore. Maybe George took his family to Vermont then?

William died on 6 October 1967 in Riverside CA and his wife Anna died on 1 Jan 1952 in LA.

I sent you a message on your Betterleys in Ohio under the name of my cousin, Nancy Brennan, by mistake. If you have any queries on what I sent you and want to respond to me on this, I would be grateful if you would respond to my email address - deirdre.mcevoy@ibicf.ie rather than hers. There is a Phylicia Salisbury looking for Betterleys in Ohio in the 1880s on the Cuyahoga County Message Board, would she be anything to you? Her email address is phylicia_s@hotmail.com, just in case you don't know her. There don't seem to too many Betterleys, other than your family living in Ohio at that time.

Sorry about the mix up of email addresses.

Thank you ever so much. I've spent hours going through the 1900 Cuyahoga County census for Cleveland & have only found a Edwin C.Betteley. This despite the fact that Aunt Mary (our only resource) is firm in the fact that all were born in Cleveland from George J. & second wife Mary Flattery. They are: Charles J. (my grandfather) 3/5/1888; Annie 1/10/1890; James 10/6/1892 (died young); Florence 9/15/1893; Grace 12/10/1895. So was Cleveland not in Cuyahoga County in the 1900's? If it was the census is not complete. Are you related in a way? Diana

No I am not related.

As far as I know Cleveland was always in Cuyahoga county - definitely in the 1900s anyway. Your family may just not have been at home the day the census was enumerated. It was only a record of the people who were physically on site on that day - they could have been visiting family in Vermont for instance and therefore would not be recorded.

Sorry I cannot be of any more help.
