I am looking for information on the children of Jonathan Butler and Ruth Wyman who were married in 1753 in NH. Their children were: Jonathan Butler b. 1756 and Ruth Butler b. 14 Mar 1761. Jonathan (1756) and Sarah Tarbox had 8 children: Jonathan 18 May 1786, Delilah 16 Nov 1787, Levi 30 Oct 1789, Reuben 10 Oct 1792, Salley 13 Sept 1794, James 24 Apr 1796, Polley 24 Mar 1798, and Darius [?] 24 Jan 1805.

Well this is interesting. Apparently Ruth Butler married John Tarbox (23 Jun 1758-3 Mar 1779 Pelham, Hillsborough, New Hampshire), the son of William and Rebecca Tarbox.

I'm actually looking for details on James Perry Tarbox b: 1781, the son of John and Ruth. I located him in the 1860 US census at Pelham listed as a boarder in the home of Laura S Butler (53, a widow born in NH) along with Juliette Butler (20) and Ellen I. Butler (15).

I see it's been awhile since you posted. Have you made progress on the line?

I haven't made much progress on the lineage of Jonathan S. Butler who I strongly suspect may be the son of Jonathan Butler and Sarah Tarbox. We know the years "our" Jonathan and his brother James were born, 10 years apart. They coincide exactly with the sons of Jonathan Butler and Sarah Tarbox--Jonathan and James (1786 and 1796). I realize that a genealogist who published an early 20th century Pelham Butler family tree said that Jonathan and James (sons of Jonathan and Sarah Tarbox Butler) "died unm" but I have also found more than a few inaccuracies in his book. A researcher in New Hampshire found no mention of the death of this Jonathan or James in New Hampshire. I believe they left New Hampshire. I find my Jonathan in New York by 1820, then Indiana and finally in Iowa where James is also living in the household. Jonathan S. Butler died in Iowa prob in 1862. I'd love to find the magic link, but so far--no luck.

I live in Iowa and I too am looking for ancestors in your neck of the woods. I have a Robert W. Butler who was born in Maryland 1799. Could your Jonathan and Sarah have had another child? My Robert lived in the Iowa County area and is buried in Clothier Pioneer Cemetery. There was mention of a Ruth in something I had read. Found family in Randolph Co. Ind. Then Robert showed up here in Iowa. You can search my tree posted on ancestry. Or, just send me a note to
Thanks for your note. Larry B.
