Hello there! You are absolutely right. I was just in Nicaragua meeting some of my family on my fathers side for the 1st time & found out everything you wrote here. He built a church (Moravian) & school in Bluefields. It is still there. I am heading to Bluefields in December to search this out further. My Fathers last name is Cabrera. His mothers maiden name was Simmons who apparently is related to this Kandler. I was told that my Gggrandfather founded the Moravaian church and school and I have pictures of these people yet dont know who they are. I have the names Oliver T.B. Simmons born Oct 16 1862; died May 21, 1941. His wife is Anna M. Simmons born Sept 28th 1862; died jan 13, 1940. Do you have pictures? My relatives have posted them on facebook. I do not speak spanish so there is quite a language barrier between my relatives and I. I do have 2 family members who do speak good english. One is an 83yr old aunt who was born in Bluefields and I am trying to get info from her....she is 83...and well...ya know...We are doing our best to gather what we can. Hope to hear from you soon...I will let you know what I find when I get on the ground.

Hello, that is great! all you have found. Yes the church and school are still there. I attended the school as a kid and my father (Ralston Kandler) was still a member of the church when we lived there. Part of the school's curriculum was bible class, so I also visited the church a lot. I am from Bluefields I left at 10 years old when the war was going on. I do have many family members that live there. I do not have contact with many of them, but I do with some and they know as much as I do. I wish as I kid I would have asked my grandmother and father more. I am fluent in spanish and english as my father's native language was english. Bluefield's legal language was english I believe through the 60s. My family, (all) even my 6 year old cousins still speak english. its amazing since the country is now all spanish. I guess most of them kept it. However, my dad did marry the spanish side as my mother is not an english speaker. Unfortunately, I do not have pictures. Due to the war I had to leave many things behind. There are articles you can find on google if you type in Moravian missionaries, Bluefields, Nicaragua. http://www.docstoc.com/docs/46814716/Go-and-make-disciples-o...- This a report someone wrote.
Let me know what you find & thank you for reaching out.
