Surnames: JOHNSON, SEMPLE,
Hi, have hit a huge wall we cant seem to get over. GG grandfather named William Jewett (Jewitt) Johnson died 1874 and buried in Green-Wood Cemetery under Jewitt Johnson, married Anna Jane (Semple) - no idea of when - approximate years 1850 to 1858 in New York we are told (but no idea where), no records on Ancestry.com; where do we go to get marriage research done at a not too high a price without having to physically visit? We are in the southern hemisphere so expensive to get there! Anyone that can give us clues as to finding marriage records in New York (everywhere) we would love to hear frm you.

Check the library catalog on familysearch.org to see what films are available for the area you're researching in.

You can read how to order films (for a small fee) on-line, have them sent you your local FHC (locations are worldwide) where you can view them.

All this info is found on the familysearch.org site.

This might help.....
Google chronicling america It will lead you to a site that has very old digitized newspapers. 1836-1922 I have found a lot of great information using this site. I have found marriage announcements, death announcements and obituaries.

Good luck.

Hi Ruby thank you. We have not had much luck with Google Books on this side of the world either, so I hope this works. It appears that we in Aust and New Zealand dont necessarily get access to the same information as people in the USA as I found when looking for e-books of my great great grandmothers writings. I will see how I go and thanks again!

Yes, I tried to get on Chronicling America this afternoon and couldn't.

Hopefully, they'll have it fixed soon.

This does not help with the marriage info, but I found his obit (Burial info matches Green-Wood Cemetery info.)

New York Herald
April 27 and April 28, 1874
JOHNSON – On Sunday, April 26, 1874, WILLIAM JEWETT, son of the late Jeremiah Johnson, in the 46th year of his age. The funeral will take place at the residence of S.J. Marston, No. 4 Prospect Place, Jersey City, on Tuesday, April 28, at two o'clock.

Note: 46th could be 45th -- type is blurry.
