Hi there. Do you have Harrison Anderson in your Anderson line? I have a marriage document that was signed by him and it states that he is from Clay Co, NC. He had a wife named Ollie Hogan Anderson. They, in turn had a son named Walter James Anderson (died in 1945). They were all in Pulaski, VA by the time of their deaths.

I have information on this line of Andersons. It begins with Elisha and Elizabeth Balloo Anderson. They are buried in Hickory Stand Cemetery in Clay County NC. I am in the 6th generation with Elisha being Generation 1. What information are you looking to find on this family group.

Hi Jimmy.

I am also descended from Elisha and Elizabeth Anderson from Clay County through their son Samuel. I am wondering if anyone knows where Elisha was before he appears in Clay County? Do you have any information on this?

Thanks!

I have not found any information on Elisha before he was married and had his own household. Census reports before 1850 only listed heads of households by names. There were only 2 Anderson Families in the Burke County NC area in 1800 around the time of Elisha's birth in 1794. One had a male head of household but no male children in the right age range. There was a female head of household that did list a 2 male children in the under 16 age group. Her name was Martha Anderson. I do not yet know if this was Elisha's family or not. Martha was later listed in the SC census records.
The first record I show of Elisha was 1830 as head of household. I have not gotten a copy of that census yet but am planning a trip to a large library this week that has a genealogy research center. I hope to get a copy of that record and a few others while there.
Here is a link to a familysearch.org search that I did that lists Andersons from 1800 - 1840 in Burke County NC. I'm not sure if it will work for you or not.

I am still in the early stages of my research.

Maybe this will help you along the way for your research.

Hi there. My line comes from Elisha as well.

Elisha and Elizabeth Anderson(NC)>Samuel and Mirah Anderson(NC)>Silas L. and Vianna Lewis Anderson (NC)> Harrison and Ollie Anderson (from NC to WVA to Pulaski,Va)> Walter and Beatrice Stuart Anderson (Pulaski, Va)> and on to present living generations in Va and NC.

Have you had any luck with Elisha's trail?

Also, I have seen Elizabeth referred to as Elizabeth Balloo Anderson..is it possible that Balloo is not a surname but a location name and that she may have been referred to as Elizabeth of Balloo (Northern Ireland)?

Unfortunately, I am at a dead end so to speak on Elisha and Elizabeth. However I am almost certain that Balloo was Elizabeth's birth surname. I have visited the grave site and the headstone reads as Elizabeth Balloo Anderson along with birth and death dates. I have attached a photo showing just that.

Unfortunately, census takers in those days may have misspelled the last name as Ballew. I have not looked at this in a while but I seem to remember, vaguely, something about Ballews in SC coming over from Ireland. But I cannot put my fingers on that info right now.

My wife has a friend that is studying to become a genealogist and I may get her to try to track down Elisha and Elizabeth. That appears to be my only possible option for now.

Thank you for your fast reply!
I have decided to try the 23andme "dot" com DNA search to see if that cannot help me-at least with the areas I might want to search in. I am pretty sure of my maternal line as well as that of my paternal grandmother. The Anderson line is from my Paternal grandfather- it has been really neat to finally have a break through that I feel is strong and find other 'relatives' on the Anderson side.

I am wondering if maybe I should start searching states along the PA wagon road for Elisha? Or even the military registers? Have you done that yet? You seem to be way ahead of me on this trail. I did a prelim search for any Balloo geneaologies and did not have luck. I will try 'Ballew'.

I have always thought the Anderson line to be predominantly Irish or Scot but since I have 'found' them in western NC, maybe there is some German heritage in there? What do you think?

Thank you for the picture. I found a similar on on the find a grave website. I would love to visit that cemetery one day.

Most of my searching has been done here: http://www.familysearch.org/
I also have the advantage of someone else having done some of the research to confirm what I thought to be correct. Once you get back to the census records that do not show names of all in the household, it get really hard to trace backwards. I was able to trace back to Elisha that way along with help from death records showing parents names. Once I got that far back, I was unable go go further.
My info on Elisha states he was born in Burke County NC so I doubt if you will find anything on the PA Wagon Road. The info I have on Elizabeth Balloo also stated that she was born in Burke Co. NC as well but I cannot find any Balloo's or Ballew's in the area around those times.
As for Samuel A. Anderson, son of Elisha and Elizabeth, I have a copy of his death certificate which I have attached here. This gives date of birth and death and cause of death along with parents names as well.
I'm not sure of whether we are German or Irish descent but I will continue to learn more as I go for sure.
A little more info I have found on Samuel is that he was married to Sarah Elmaria Green. Both are buried at Hickory Stand Cemetery in Brasstown NC. They did have a son named Silas Leon Anderson b. abt. 1859. All of this research was done by someone else and the information was shared with me by an uncle that still resides in Brasstown, NC. This document shows the your family line through Silas Harrison Anderson d. Apr 1973. It also shows his siblings as Arthur Alexander, John, Alice, Robert, Abraham, and Ardell. I have a scan of this document (38 pages) and could send you a pdf file if you would like to have a copy. It is about 15 megabytes so it may be a slow download for you. It is not my work so I cannot take the credit but it does contain a lot of notes/citations at the end of the document for reference.
I could also send individual pages if you only want direct line info for your family line.
