I'm looking for anyone who has information on James Enoch Harriss married to Nancy Ellen. As far as I know they were from Jack County, Texas. One of their sons was Charles Oran, that was my father in law. James Dempsey was his brother, Ed in Arizona. May be spelled with one s in Harriss.

Hi, Linda,

My grandfather was James Edward Harriss, called Ned. Lived in Camp County Texas. Died in 1936. He was the last of the family to use the
"ss" spelling of Harriss. I have family tree from days the family came from England. May or may not be related to your family. Bettye Herlocker

Hi Bettye,
I saw your message to Linda Harriss on Rootsweb. My name is Linda Harriss also. In my family line, we are still using the second "s."

Hopefully we share the same ancestry, and I can share what I have. I have not been able to trace back to England, however. My Edward Harriss (Sr.), in the early 1700s in VA, is the earliest Harriss I can find. Can you clue me in at all?
Thanks very much,
Linda Harriss Kesler

Hi Linda,
My name is Linda Harriss, too! I am not familiar with the names in your query. However, I know that some Harriss brothers moved south, while my Harriss brother (Edward Harriss II) moved from VA to NC to SC to TN to IL. Your ancestor must be one of those who moved to GA, AL, (LA?) and TX.

I have done research on these earlier brothers. For instance, apparently the earliest Edward Harriss fought in the French and Indian War and lived in VA. Have you traced the earlier Harrisses also? Do you know where in England/Wales they came from? Would love to share info.

The Edward Harris that I believe my lineage comes from was one of two sons of Maj. William Harris who was the son of Thomas, Immigrant - 1587-1649.

There were many Edwards appearing through the years which can cause some confusion.

We were always told that there was a James Edward every other generaton since the Immigrant. I know how true, but I have a brother named James Edward and my grandfather was James edward. Bjh

Hi Bettye,

Thank you for responding. My husband is in the Harris DNA study, and the results point toward Thomas the Immigrant through the sons William and Edward . We have some matches now coming out of SC that seem to be going toward the Edward line, but I need some help with the early ones...could you write me off line?...patclare at aol dot com....I am also trying to sort out the Gilliams. Any chance you have a male Harris in your line who might help us to tie down the DNA? pat
