My gggrandfather was Isaac McKown, born in Brooke County VA (now West Virginia) abt. 1828. He served in the Civil war, West Virginia 1st Infantry, Company F from 1862-1865. After the war, he returned to Jackson County, West Virginia where he lived with his wife Eliza (or Experience?) and his children Harriet, Mary M. (my ggrandmother), Jonas or Joshua, Lou Emma, and Gilbert B. McKown.
I Have been unable to find Isaac's ancestry. If anyone recognizes this family, I am very anxious for any information.

Chester,
Believe it or not, there were 2 Isaac McKown's in Jackson Count around the 1850's. I have a copy of the discarge papers for my gggrandfather, which is how I know he was born in Brooke County. He is in the 1870 census for Jackson County and my ggrandfather, George Washongton Bachus, is living on his farm as a laborer; My ggrandfather married Isaac's daughter Mary McKown later in 1870 in Jackson County. I know the other Isaac lived in Jackson County at the same time and is a descendant of James McKown and Lady Jane Crawford. There is info on that Isaac's family in the biographies on the Jackson County Website. Thanks for the response. hope I have helped some. Lana

Suspect that your gggrandfather Isaac is a brother to our Joseph McKown, b abt 1834 in Brooke Co WV/VA. Your Isaac and our Joseph lived next door in Jackson Co WV in 1870; our Joseph named 1st son Isaac. Suspect that one of the many Gilbert McKowns was their father. Bersheba McKown b abt 1801, widow of a Gilbert b 1797, lives next to Joseph in 1880. Joseph moved to Arkansas in early 1800s, perhaps after Bersheba's death. Bersheba's other given name may have been Ann/Anna. Does any of this fit with your information?

Surnames: McKown, Bachus
I am soooo happy to hear from you! Issac & Experience(?) his wife have been a dead end thus far. My cousin came up with a copy of Isaac's discharge from the Army during the Civil War, that was how I learned he was from Brooke County.
I found him in the 1870 Jackson County census, my ggrandfather is listed under his household as a mason, his name was George W. Bachus, later that year George married Isaac's daughter Mary Matilda McKown. George & Mary are buried at Blaine Cemetery, Cottageville, WV. The other McKown family in Jackson County at that time also has an Issac. I would appreciate any information that you have. My Dad will be very excited to hear we found his grandmother's family.

I have a GGGGGrandfather Isaac McKown (or McQuown as it became spelled in more recent history) I've been frustrated chasing him. I keep finding Isaac & Gilbert in WV & at the same time finding Isaac & John in Washington Co., VA. I think these Washington guys are my ancestors, but I need to untangle them. Who is John? Who was the Isaac that they were all named after? I think Isaac was married to Ann Orr & his dad was another Isaac? his wife unknown to me. Any help is welcomed!
