GZOWSKI BILLARD FLEMING 1846-1911

Hi,

I am researching my branch of the Fleming family, descended from James Fleming (b.1760 in Northern Ireland, d. 1838 in Aldborough Twp, Ontario) and Barbara WINDECKER. One of James' grandsons was Gzowski Billard Fleming. I am curious at how he got a Polish first name-is there a Gzowski family in Ontario that the Flemings could have known? The rest of his siblings had "normal" names.

Thank you for your time.

wild guess - possible association with Sir Casimir Gzowski in London.

Gzowski Fleming is shown in the 1881 census, and in the OCFA, and the LDS familysearch.

Merv - NOT related.

Thank you, Merv! That might be a good guess after all; what an influential man in Canadian (particularly Ontario) history, but I'd never heard of him. It would be the same as when a child is named after George Washington or another famous American. Perhaps Gzowski Fleming's father and Casimir were friends; the Flemings became a large and fairly well off family in their own right.
