Surnames: Worster/Wentworth
I was recently told by a long lost relative, who is also researching my family, that my great-great-grandfather John was born, out of wedlock, John Henry Wentworth. Supposedly he was taken in and raised by a family named Worster and eventually took on the name although he was never legally adopted by the family.
She is supposed to be sending me the info she has but has given me no indication of how long it may take her to get it to me. So, in the mean time I have been trying to find some evidence to support what she has told me, and so far I've come up empty handed.
The only record I've managed to find on him is a census record that includes his wife and children and has him listed as Worster. Any help would be much appreciated.

do you know what his name should have been? have you a date of birth?

Adoption in the early years was rarely legal - you just did so it would'nt be unusual

He was born John Henry Wentworth and changed his name to John Henry Worster. He was born Dec 1848 according to the 1900 census which has him listed as Worster so he changed his name sometime before that. He Married Iola (or maybe Tola) Andrews but I don't know when.

I came across your post tonight. Funny, because John H. Worster is also my husbands g-g-grandfather. His son Henry Leroy and then my husbands grandmother Gladys, who just celebrated her 100th birthday last week.I have just started working on this line, but I've never heard anything about him changing his name from Wentworth.However....John Henrys son, Henry, married a Wentworth. Namely, Jennie Belle Wentworth. My husbands Aunt has done lots of genealogy work, some on this family, and I never heard about an adoption.Good Luck. And I have John Henrys wife listed as Viola Rhodes.
