Seeking information on Andrew Johnston who immigrated from Ireland in mid 1850's. Was married to Elizabeth Nickelson. Children included my great grandfather, John Johnston who was b. Feb 2, 1861 in Hensall (Hay) Huron County Ontario. Other children were Elizabeth b. 1849, Margaret b. abt 1855, Edward b. abt 1857, Andrew b. abt 1865, Jane b. abt 1869, Mary b. abt 1871, Emmaline b. abt 1877 and James b. abt 1879. Family lore is that Andrew died along with two oldest sons from smallpox. Elizabeth married his cousin of the same name (Andrew), who was 14 years her junior, and they had more children.
John married Sarah Mitchell daughter of Robert and Sarah Mitchell. She was b. in Blythe.
Any information would be helpful. Thank you,
Diana Pfeiffer

Thank you Jim for the information on the above family. I see some new names on the cemetery inscriptions. Mary, Emaline and Graham. This is good information and I appreciate your help! I am wondering if Mary and Emaline were children and if Graham was the son of one of them... The search goes on!

Hello! I just came across your post about Andrew Johnston dying and his wife remarrying his cousin of the same name. You mentioned this is "family lore." Where does this legend come from? I am very interested in this topic, as your great grandfather John's younger brother was my great, great grandfather, Edward Johnston. It looks like the 1861 Census records the original Andrew Johnston, and the 1871 Census must record the younger "cousin" Andrew. Until I came across your post, I assumed it must be another family of the same name because the "dad" was so young. Any extra info you could provide me on this, including anything about the "family lore" would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,

Mark Odland
