John & Maria (nee O'Rourke) Sherlock's 8 children were born between 1837 & 1852. This family left Dorrha (the parish is sometimes called Lorrha) in northern Tipperary, Ireland in late 1852. Although they have been traced since leaving Ireland, John had at least one brother who remained there. His brothers name is unknown, but he was a farmer & it is thought that the farm was a successful one. John & his brother's parents are unknown.
Maria O'Rourke was the daughter of William & Mary O'Rourke (nee Killeen). Maria was born in County Kildare. But nothing is known of her parents or siblings, or where Maria O'Rourke & John Sherlock were married in approx the mid 1830's. Any information would be helpful.

Hi

I just found your post after doing a google search for rourke to Sherlock.
I have a long standing puzzle over the name of my wife's family in the mid 19th century. It seems the children of the family who lived in Newton Heath, Manchester, uk changed their names fromRourke (their father ) to Sherlock . We don't know why.
Can you shed any light please?
The mother changed her name to Keegan!
