Rosalia and Mettie DODGE, Vern OSTERLOTH

Searching for DOD & place of burial of Rosalia Dodge and her daughter, Mettie, belived to have been killed about 1934 on a farm near Wibaux or possibly Beach, ND.
Believe Mettie's son, Vern Osterloth, live at Wibaux at this time.
Will appreciate any clues to the death of these 2 ladies.
Thank you. Gordon Wood

Montana Death Index (abt. 1952-1999), available by subscription from Ancestry.com, indicates:

OSTERLOTH, Vern E.
Died: 01 June 1960 at the age of 85 years
Marital Status: Widowed
County of Residence & Death: Fergus County, MT
Online File #: 49

OSTERLOTH, Ina M.
Died: 16 July 1984 at the age of 81 years
Marital Status: Widowed
County of Residence & Death: Wibaux County, MT
Online File #: 3766

Note: I have found that occasionally there are errors in the county of residence and/or death, due to (Montana Vital Records tells me) a computer glitch that couldn't read a change in the way deaths were coded. So, maybe Vern died in Fergus Co., and maybe he died in Wibaux Co.

Go to this site and check out the possibilities at both Fergus and Wibaux Counties:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~mtgenweb/countytbl.html

To obtain a copy of Vern's obituary at a very reasonable price, contact the Montana Historical Society and Archives:

MT Historical Society & Archives
P.O. Box 201201
Helena, MT 59620-1201
PHONE: (406) 444-7482 (Molly Miller, Archivist)

You might inquire as to any records there may be of the Dodge ladies' death. However, without an exact date, I doubt this would be possible.

Good luck!

Hello,
I was wondering about your question on the osterloth/dodge surname. My Grandmother is Ina and I am interested in knowing more about my heritage. What have you uncovered so far and are we related? Any info you could give me would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Christopher Osterloth

Hello Christopher,

I was pleased to receive your message on the Osterloth family. It would be helpful to  know your grandfather's name, grandmother's maiden name and their dates of birth, marriage & death.  I do have an "Ina" in my records who would have been born in the early 1900s and died at Wibaux in the early
1980s. Her husband's name was Vern Edward Osterloth. The only child from this marriage of which I have record is a Verna Osterloth (b. ca. 1930?) who married a man named Tosner and lived at Beach, ND. If this data fits your relatives and time period, let me know.  I have a great deal of information but it is quite a long story and goes back many generations. I will be glad to share my information with you if you can confirm these names & dates.

If these are you paternal grandparents, we would be related in a distant way.    It would be on your paternal side and then via Vern Osterloth's mother. I also have been in touch with other members of this Osterloth family and can give you their names and addresses as well if you want them.

Send me an e-mail at your convenience.   I look forward to hearing from you,

Best regards,  Gordon Wood

Gordon,
I'm glad to see someone else is looking into the Osterloth Family! It's an odd name, so I figure we are distantly related. I'm the grandson of Elmer and Goldie (Potter) Osterloth. Unfortunately, I do not have my genealogical research available at the moment, so I can't recall more detailed information. I will send that to you. Please send me a message and I'll respond. I would like to know from where the Osterloth's came and when. Do you have any specific information on that? Pax, Duane Osterloth

Thank you for the offer. I would appreciate any information you can send about Mettie and her mom, Rosalie Sweet Dodge Stager. If you are sending it snail-mail, let me know how much the postage will be and I will refund it to you.

FYI I am descended from Mettie’s Aunt, Mary Sweet, who was born in 1840. (Mary was my mother’s grandmother. Mary and Mettie’s mom, Rosalie, were sisters ). There were 12 children in this Sweet family and I was missing the details on Rosalie’s & Mettie’s death until just a few years ago.

Mettie had a younger sister, Gussie born 1877 in Washington County, Kansas (Mettie was born there in 1872). I know Gussie married twice. She had a daughter (born in 1894) from her first marriage. Her second marriage was in 1896 but by Dec. 1899 she had died. Do you have any information on Gussie?

I will be glad to share any of my data on this Sweet family that you care to have. Gordon
