I just found some more info on John Auchmoutie, in Alex Maxwell Findlater’s splendid new facsimile of Lord Crawford’s Armorial (Heraldry Soc of Scot, 2008), where the biographical appendix has an entry for John Auchmoutie of that Ilk, b. 1550, d. 1608, whose 8 offspring are described as minor gentry in the East Neuk of Fife and possibly include John Auchmoutie of Scougall, who is recorded as Page of Honour from 1591-99 and Valet to the King in 1603. Maxwell Findlater cites the 1615 testament of a certain Christian Douglas which describes her as wife of John of Scougall, one of His Majesty’s Bedchamber. I think this must be our John Auchmoutie, who is described as Master of the King’s Wardrobe in 1616 when the embroidered beds were to be sent to London for repairs. What do you think? An Elizabeth Auchmoutie is recorded as Mistress Nurse to Prince Henry and wet nurse to Lady Elizabeth in 1596. The court connections are manifest.
Does this sound plausible to you? I’ll quiz Maxwell Findlater once I’ve recovered his email address, which seems to have disappeared into digital limbo on my laptop (I was in contact with him only last year). He cites the following refs for Auchmoutie: Lyon Office bundle 593; W.Wood, ‘East Neuk of Fife’ (1887); RMS III-VII; Edinburgh Testaments -- none of which I’ve looked into as yet.
