Looking for descendants of Fredrich and Wilhelmine Esch. Came to U.S. from Prussia/Germany in the late 1800's and settled in Michigan. Their children: John, Carl, Theodore, Wilhelm, Louis, Wilhelmina (Minnie), and Frederick. Some family members changed their surname to Ash or Asch.

Dorene,

I recently hit paydirt when I looked up the Esch family in a set of books, now out of print, at the Dallas Public Library. The set of books is in German, titled "Deutsches geschlecterbuch", which translates to German relationships.

I believe your branch of the family may be listed in the same line as mine. The listing traces this branch back to 1660. I am in the process of getting help in reading the old German script. I have five years of German, but the script is difficult for me to read. I have a friend locally who is first generation American from Germany. She is researching their genealogy in the old German script and reads it quite well.

The Esch family genealogy has been traced back to 1067 AD (the Crusades). There was royalty in the family, so the records were maintained. The Esch family is a HUGE one, and there are many branches.

Please contact me at my email address: pltaylor@mindspring.com. I will be happy to share what I've learned. I've already found two other distant cousins from my more recent direct line. I'd love to see how closely we're related. I'll look forward to hearing further from you.

Doreen, I hope you're still checking this message board! You may be the connection I'm looking for.

My great grandfather was Charles Ash, but it was Anglicized from Carl Esch, or so we've been told. His death certificate says he came from Kreiss Templin, Prussia about 1860, and in 1875 he was a founding member of a Lutheran church in Livonia MI. Some of our relatives still use the Esch surname. My grandfather's name was Ernest Herbert Ash, and I know there is a Fredricka and a Wilhemlina in the family.
I'd love to hear from you, and I hope there's a connection!

Dear David,
There is a ton of information regarding this family. What would you like to know? Who was it that first came to America in your family, William, Henry, or Adam? These three brothers arrived at different times. Which of them are you descended from?
